Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions for delivering carbon monoxide (CO) to cells using heme proteins as carriers. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to the use of MalPEG surface modified hemoglobin to deliver CO to cells.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 21 . (canceled)

22 . A carbon monoxide-hemoglobin (CO-Hb) complex that is useful for delivering carbon monoxide to blood cells, comprising:
hemoglobin (Hb); malemidyl-activated polyethylene glycol (MalPEG) conjugated to the Hb to form surface-modified MalPEG-Hb conjugates; and carbon monoxide (CO) liganded to the Hb; wherein the MalPEG-Hb binds CO more tightly than native unmodified hemoglobin from the same source when measured under the same conditions.

23 . The complex according to claim 22 , wherein the MalPEG is maleimidyl-activated polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 5000 (MalPEG 5000).

24 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising the CO-Hb complex according to claim 22 , and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
