Abstract

Disclosed is a respiratory cannula assembly to deliver and receive gases from a patient. The cannula assembly contains two oral prongs for delivering and receiving gases from the patient as well as at least one gas delivery nasal prong and at least one gas receiving nasal prong. The gas receiving nasal prong extends further into the patients nostril than the gas delivery nasal prong. The cannula assembly further contains a connector that aids in coupling to a medical device, the connector including independent oral and nasal moisture traps that remove moisture from exhaled patient gases.

Claims

 a) an oral-nasal cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including a respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong and a respiratory-gas-sampling oral prong; and a) a slidable tube slidably connected to one of the respiratory-gas-sampling nasal and oral prongs to accommodate different distances between the nose and mouth of different patients.

       2 . The cannula assembly of claim 1 , wherein the slidable tube is slidably connected to the respiratory-gas-sampling oral prong, wherein the slidable tube has a substantially right-angle bend and a distal end, and wherein, when the cannula is disposed on the face of the patient, the distal end of the slidable tube extends distally toward or into the mouth of the patient.

       3 . A cannula assembly comprising:
 a) a cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including a respiratory-gas-sampling or respiratory-gas-delivery oral prong having an opening; and b) a user-detachable oral prong extension which comes removably attached to the oral prong and which is user-connectable to the opening of the oral prong.

       4 . A cannula assembly comprising a cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including a respiratory-gas-sampling oral prong having a distal end and a respiratory-gas-delivery oral prong having a distal end, wherein, when the cannula is disposed on the face of the patient, the distal end of the respiratory-gas-sampling oral prong extends distally further toward or into the mouth of the patient than the distal end of the respiratory-gas-delivery oral prong.

       5 . A cannula assembly comprising a cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including left and right cannula support wings each having a wing tip portion with an adhesive pad removably adhesively attachable to a side of the face of the patient.

       6 . A cannula assembly comprising a cannula disposable on the face of a patient, including a cannula body having a respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong, and including a cannula cap having a respiratory-gas-delivery nasal prong with a tube-receiving hole, wherein the cannula cap is attached to the cannula body with the respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong passing through and extending beyond the tube-receiving hole, and wherein the tube-receiving hole is disposed to bend the respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong toward the nose of the patient when the cannula is disposed on the face of the patient.

       7 . A cannula assembly comprising a cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including a respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong having a distal end and a respiratory-gas-delivery nasal prong having a distal end, wherein, when the cannula is disposed on the face of the patient, the distal end of the respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong extends distally further toward or into one of the nostrils of the patient than the distal end of the respiratory-gas-delivery nasal prong.

       8 . The cannula assembly of claim 7 , wherein the respiratory-gas-sampling nasal prong is circumferentially surrounded by the respiratory-gas-delivery nasal prong.

       9 . A cannula assembly comprising:
 a) an oral-nasal cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including a left-nostril respiratory-gas-sampling tube, a right-nostril respiratory-gas-sampling tube, and an oral respiratory-gas-sampling tube; and b) a connector including a cover and a back plate attached to the cover, wherein the cover includes an interior nasal moisture trap chamber and an interior oral moisture trap chamber isolated from the interior nasal moisture trap chamber, wherein the back plate includes a nasal capnometry port and an oral capnometry port, wherein the left and right nostril respiratory-gas-sampling tubes are connected to the cover and are in fluid communication with the interior nasal moisture trap chamber, wherein the oral respiratory-gas-sampling tube is connected to the cover and is in fluid communication with the interior oral moisture trap chamber, wherein the nasal capnometry port is in fluid communication with the interior nasal moisture trap chamber, and wherein the oral capnometry port is in fluid communication with the interior oral moisture trap chamber.

       10 . The cannula assembly of claim 9 , wherein the connector also includes a hydrophobic filter disposed between the interior nasal moisture trap chamber and the nasal capnometry port and a hydrophobic filter disposed between the interior oral moisture trap chamber and the oral capnometry port.

       11 . The cannula assembly of claim 9 , wherein the connector also includes an inter-flow-path-sealing gasket disposed between the interior nasal and oral moisture trap chambers and the nasal pressure, nasal capnometry, and oral capnometry ports, and wherein the inter-flow-path-sealing gasket includes annular towers which extend into the nasal capnometry and oral capnometry ports and provide, at least in part, the fluid communication between the interior nasal moisture trap chamber and the nasal capnometry port and between the oral moisture trap chamber and the oral capnometry port.

       12 . A cannula assembly comprising:
 a) a cannula disposable on the face of a patient and including a respiratory-gas-sampling tube; and b) a connector including:
 (1) a cover;
 (2) a back plate attached to the cover, wherein the cover includes an interior moisture trap chamber, wherein the back plate includes a capnometry port, wherein the respiratory-gas-sampling tube is connected to the cover and is in fluid communication with the interior moisture trap chamber, and wherein the capnometry port is in fluid communication with the interior moisture trap chamber; and
