Abstract

Provided herein is an innovative hemoperfusion system and method including a thermal-fused broad-spectrum biocidal iodinated interactive polymer for the treatment of biological contaminants in body fluids. In one exemplary embodiment, the system and method utilizes a Triosyn® thermal fused broad-spectrum iodinated interactive polymer, included in a hemoperfusion column, for devitalizing high levels of cell-free microorganisms in whole blood and biological fluids in relation with the characterization of blood cells viability and function post-treatment

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method for decontaminating blood, comprising:
 a) providing a hemoperfusion unit containing a low-density chamber including an effective amount of demand disinfectant, said demand disinfectant being an iodinated resin; b) separating a unit of blood infected with a quantity of bacteria or viral particles to provide a red blood cell concentrate and a plasma concentrate; c) discarding the plasma concentrate; d) diluting the red blood cell concentrate with an aqueous solution; e) filtering said diluted red blood cell concentrate through said hemoperfusion unit at a selected flow rate,
wherein the amount of bacteria or viral particles is reduced by greater than 90%.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of bacteria or viral particles is reduced by greater than 95%.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of bacteria or viral particles is reduced by greater than 99%.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the bacteria or viral particles are selected from the group consisting of Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and MS2.

5 . The method of claim 1 further comprising gravity filtering red blood cell concentrate through a leukocyte filter to remove leukocytes prior to diluting the red blood cell concentrate.

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising gravity filtering red blood cell concentrate through a leukocyte filter to remove leukocytes after diluting the red blood cell concentrate.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous solution is a saline solution.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the said flow rate is 50 ml/mm.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the said flow rate is 20 ml/mm.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the a low-density chamber further contains hydrodynamic diffusers.

11 . A method for decontaminating blood, comprising:
 a) providing a hemoperfusion unit containing a low-density chamber including an effective amount of demand disinfectant, said demand disinfectant being an iodinated resin; b) sonicating a unit of blood infected with a quantity of bacteria or viral particles: c) separating the unit of blood to provide a red blood cell concentrate and a plasma concentrate; d) discarding the plasma concentrate; e) diluting the red blood, cell concentrate with an aqueous solution; f) filtering said diluted red blood cell concentrate through said hemoperfusion unit at a selected flow rate. wherein the amount of bacteria or viral particles is reduced by greater than 90%.

12 . A method of disinfecting red blood cells, comprising passing a unit of red blood cells infected with a quantity of bacteria or viral particles through a hemoperfusion unit containing a demand disinfectant iodinated resin, wherein the amount of bacteria or viral particles is reduced by greater than 90%.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the hemoperfusion unit contains hydrodynamic diffusers that maximize contact time between said bacterial or viral particles and said demand disinfectant iodinated resin.

14 . The method as in claim 1 wherein said unit of whole blood is provided by a donor; said method further comprising: transfusing said red blood concentrate of step e) into said donor or a donee.

15 . A filtration method, comprising: providing a contaminated product having high concentrations of microorganisms; filtering said contaminated product with a hemoperfusion unit to remove said microorganisms; said hemoperfusion unit comprising: a low-density column including an effective amount of demand disinfectant; said disinfecting being an iodinated resin, wherein the concentration of microorganisms is reduced by greater than 90%.

16 . A portable hemoperfusion filtration system, comprising:
 a) a plasma separator for removing plasma from whole blood to provide a red blood cell concentrate; b) a dilution device for diluting said red blood cell concentrate; c) a chamber containing a demand disinfectant, said demand disinfectant being an iodinated resin contained in said column; and d) a pump for moving said diluted red blood cell concentrate a blood constitute through said chamber column at a selected flow rate.

17 . The filtration system of claim 1 , wherein the chamber further contains hydrodynamic diffusers.

18 . A hemoperfusion filtration chamber comprising a demand disinfectant iodinated resin and a hydrodynamic diffuser, wherein the diffuser functions to increase the contact efficacy between the iodinated resin and bacteria in blood that is passed through said chamber.
