Abstract

Pioglitazone can be made via a Darzens Condensation reaction in an industrially useful process.

     wherein R represents a C 1 -C 4  alkyl group or an optionally substituted phenyl group and R 1  is C 1 -C 4  alkyl group. 
   
   
       2 . The compound according to  claim 1 , wherein said compound is represented by formula (7) and R 1  represents ethyl or tertiary-butyl. 
   
   
       3 . The compound according to  claim 2 , wherein said compound is in isolated form. 
   
   
       4 . The compound according to  claim 1 , wherein said compound is represented by formula (8) and R represents a C 1 -C 4  alkyl group.
