Abstract

The invention relates to systems and methods for using a template in the authentication process using biometric data. In one embodiment, a module modifies a template of the reference set of biometric data with the candidate set of biometric data when the user is authenticated. In another embodiment, a module modifies a copy of the template of the reference biometric data with modification data thereby creating a challenge template. The client compares the challenge template to a candidate set of biometric data thereby creating a response vector. A module authenticates the user based on the response vector and the modification data.

Claims

1 .- 22 . (canceled)

23 . A method for authentication using biometrics, the method comprising:
receiving an authentication request requesting authentication of a user; receiving a first biometric indicium from the user; comparing the first biometric indicium with a second biometric indicium; and based on the comparison, modifying the second biometric indicium with features from the first biometric indicium, resulting in a third biometric indicium.

24 . The method in claim 23 wherein the augmenting step comprises replacing the second biometric indicium in storage with the first biometric indicium.

25 . The method of claim 23 wherein the comparison step further comprises identifying one or more features of the second biometric indicium that match one or more features of the first biometric indicium.

26 . The method of claim 25 wherein the augmenting step further comprises augmenting the second biometric indicium with features of the first biometric indicium not present in the second biometric indicium.

27 . The method of claim 25 wherein the augmenting step further comprises augmenting statistical data associated with the second biometric indicium based at least in part on the first biometric indicium.

28 . The method of claim 27 wherein the step of augmenting statistical data further comprises increasing the weighting of the matched features.

29 . The method of claim 23 further comprising normalizing the first biometric indicium.

30 . The method of claim 23 further comprising filtering the first biometric indicium.

31 . The method of claim 23 further comprising extracting from the first biometric indicium identifying features.

32 . The method of claim 23 wherein the second biometric indicium is stored in a supertemplate.

33 . A system for authentication using biometrics, the system comprising:
a network interface module configured to receive an authentication request requesting authentication of a user and to receive a first biometric indicium from the user; a storage module configured to store a second biometric indicium; an authentication module configured to compare the first biometric indicium with the second biometric indicium; and an augmentor module configured to modify, based on the comparison, the second biometric indicium with features from the first biometric indicium, resulting in a third biometric indicium.

34 . The system in claim 33 wherein the augmentor module is further configured to replace the second biometric indicium in the storage module with the first biometric indicium if the second biometric indicium sufficiently matches the first biometric indicium.

35 . The system of claim 33 wherein the authentication module is further configured to identify one or more features of the second biometric indicium that match one or more features of the first biometric indicium.

36 . The system of claim 35 wherein the augmentor module is further configured to augment the second biometric indicium with features from the first biometric indicium not included in the second biometric indicium.

37 . The system of claim 35 wherein the augmentor module is further configured to augment statistical data associated with the second biometric based at least in part on the first biometric indicium.

38 . The system of claim 37 wherein the augmentor module is further configured to increase the weighting of the matched features.

39 . The system of claim 33 further comprising a normalizer module configured to normalize the first biometric indicium.

40 . The system of claim 33 further comprising a filter module configured to filter the first biometric indicium.

41 . The system of claim 33 further comprising an extractor module configured to extract from the first biometric indicium identifying features.

42 . The system of claim 33 wherein the second biometric indicium is stored in a supertemplate.

43 . An article of manufacture having computer-readable program portions embodied therein for authentication using biometrics, the article comprising:
a computer-readable program portion for receiving an authentication request requesting authentication of a user; a computer-readable program portion for receiving a first biometric indicium from the user; a computer-readable program portion for comparing the first biometric indicium with a second biometric indicium; and a computer-readable program portion for modifying, based on the comparison, the second biometric indicium with features from the first biometric indicium, resulting in a third biometric indicium.

44 . The article of claim 43 further comprising a computer-readable program portion for identifying one or more features of the second biometric indicium that match one or more features of the first biometric indicium.
