Lobed drive for hi-lite fastener
Abstract
A drive socket for a male threaded fastener includes three rounded lobes of equal radius which are located equidistant from the center of the fastener and 120° apart from each other. The drive socket also includes three flat surfaces, each flat surface being located opposite one of the lobes and equidistant from the center of the fastener. Another embodiment of a drive socket includes a first set of three lobes and a second set of three lobes, each lobe being of equal radius and equidistant from the center of the fastener. The lobes of the first set are 120° apart and the lobes of the second set are also 120° apart and 60° apart from the lobes of the first set. Each of the lobes of the first set includes a flat surface which is adjacent and tangential to the radius portion of the lobe.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A drive socket for a fastener, the drive socket being configured to receive a key driver having a plurality of flat surfaces and a plurality of corners at intersections between the plurality of flat surfaces, the drive socket comprising:
a surface of the drive socket defining a first plurality of lobes of substantially equal radius located substantially equidistant from a center of the fastener and substantially equidistant circumferentially from each other, each of the lobes of the first plurality of lobes including a curved portion and a flat surface portion, said flat surface portion being located adjacent to and tangential to the curved portion, said flat surface portions of said first plurality of lobes receiving a first set of alternating ones of said plurality of flat surfaces of the key driver; the surface of the drive socket defining a second plurality of lobes having rounded surfaces of substantially equal radius positioned about the center of the fastener, each of the second plurality of lobes being located substantially opposite one of the first plurality of lobes and substantially equidistant from the center of the fastener, and the second plurality of lobes receiving a second set of alternating ones of said plurality of flat surfaces of the key driver; and the surface of the drive socket defining a plurality of curved recesses smoothly transitioning between the first plurality of lobes and the second plurality of lobes, each of said curved portions of said first plurality of lobes being directly connected to one of said curved recesses, and the plurality of corners of the key driver remaining out of contact with said curved recesses.
2 . The drive socket of claim 1 , wherein the first and second plurality of lobes project inward toward the center of the fastener.Cited by (0)
