Abstract

Peptide fragments that modulate thrombosis and methods of use thereof are provided. Also provided are synthetic bioactive anti-coagulation peptides, compositions comprising such peptides and methods for the administration to patients in need thereof.

         7 . A method for inhibiting thrombosis in a patient in need thereof, said method comprising the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising an anti-coagulation peptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 56 in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein the tyrosine residues of the peptide are modified by phosphorylation or sulfation.

A method for inhibiting thrombosis in a patient in need thereof, said method comprising the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising a synthetic anti-coagulation peptide selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 17-47, wherein tyrosine residues of said synthetic anti-coagulation peptide are modified by phosphorylation or sulfation, in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, and wherein said peptide optionally comprises at least one amino acid substitution selected from the group consisting of a valine substituted for a threonine, a valine substituted for a serine, and a conservative amino acid substitution, wherein said conservative amino acid substitution is the replacement of an amino acid for another amino acid in the same group of amino acids as defined in Table II.

         43 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein at least one of said tyrosine residues is modified by sulfation. 
     
     
         44 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein both tyrosine residues are modified by phosphorylation. 
     
     
         45 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein said peptide is modified by acylation. 
     
     
         46 . The method of  claim 45 , wherein said acylation modification comprises acetylation at the amino terminus.
