System and method for providing integrated voice and data services utilizing wired cordless access with unlicensed spectrum and wired access with licensed spectrum
Abstract
Systems and methods provide integrated wireless and wired data voice and data services via a dual mode telecommunications device. A dual mode telephone operates as a digital cordless handset of a wired data network in a structure equipped with one or more wireless access points to allow voice over Internet protocol communication via the wired data network. The dual mode telecommunications device also operates as a conventional mobile wireless telephone via a licensed spectrum wireless network when the telephone is moved outside the range of a wireless access point of the user's home or business or other venue.

2 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
executing, using at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
servicing, via a licensed wireless network, at least one of an incoming call or an outgoing call via a mobile wireless device;
determining whether the mobile wireless device enters an unlicensed wireless network based on a medium access control (MAC) address broadcast by the mobile wireless device;
assigning an internet protocol (IP) address to the mobile wireless device based on the MAC address; and
servicing, via the unlicensed wireless network, the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call based on the IP address.
3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
requesting unique subscriber identity information from the mobile wireless device via the unlicensed wireless network; and terminating the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call based on the requesting.
4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
verifying whether the unique subscriber identity information is included in a home location register (HLR); wherein the terminating comprises terminating the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call when the unique subscriber identity information is not included in the HLR.
5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
detecting reduced connectivity between the mobile wireless device and the unlicensed wireless network; deciding whether the mobile wireless device entered the licensed wireless network; and servicing, via the licensed wireless network, the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call via the mobile wireless device based on the deciding.
6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
assigning a wireless number to the mobile wireless device for communication via the licensed wireless network; assigning a wired data line number to the mobile wireless device for communication via the unlicensed wireless network; and forwarding a communication directed to or from the wireless number to the wired data line number via the unlicensed wireless network based on the determining.
7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , further comprising:
providing at least one of a voice service or a data service to the mobile wireless device during the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call.
8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
servicing, via at least one of a global system for mobile communications (GSM) network or a general packet radio service (GPRS) network, the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call via the mobile wireless device.
9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
determining whether the mobile wireless device enters at least one of a Bluetooth™ network, a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) HiperLAN network, or an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11b network based on the MAC address broadcast by the mobile wireless device; and servicing, via the at least one of the Bluetooth™ network, the ETSI HiperLAN network, or the IEEE 802.11b network, the at least one of the incoming call or the outgoing call via the mobile wireless device based on the IP address.
10 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
executing, using at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
receiving a medium access control (MAC) address broadcasted by a dual mode device via an unlicensed wireless network;
assigning an internet protocol (IP) address to the dual mode device based on the MAC address; and
transferring an active communication serviced by the dual mode device via a licensed wireless network to the unlicensed wireless network based on the IP address.
11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
requesting unique subscriber identity information from the dual mode device via the unlicensed wireless network; verifying whether the unique subscriber identity information is included in a database associated with a wired data network associated with the unlicensed wireless network; and transferring the active communication based on the verifying.
12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
receiving the MAC address broadcast by the dual mode device via at least one of a Bluetooth™ network, a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) HiperLAN network, or an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11b network; and transferring the active communication serviced by the dual mode device via the licensed wireless network to the at least one of a Bluetooth™ network, the ETSI HiperLAN network, or the IEEE 802.11b network based on the IP address.
13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , wherein the transferring comprises:
transferring at least one of a voice service or a data service provided to the dual mode device via the licensed wireless network to the unlicensed wireless network based on the IP address.
14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 13 , wherein the transferring further comprises:
transferring the at least one of the voice service or the data service provided to the dual mode device via at least one of a global system for mobile communications (GSM) network or a general packet radio service (GPRS) network to the unlicensed wireless network based on the IP address.
15 . The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , wherein the executing further comprises executing, using the at least one processor, computer-readable instructions for performing the following acts:
associating a wireless number to the dual mode device for communication via the licensed wireless network; and associating a wired data line number to the dual mode device for communication via the unlicensed wireless network; wherein the transferring comprises transferring the active communication directed to or from the wireless number to the wired data line number based on the IP address.
16 . A system comprising:
means for detecting a medium access control (MAC) address broadcasted by a dual mode device via an unlicensed wireless connection; means for assigning an IP address to the dual mode device based on the MAC address; and means for routing a call associated with a wireless number serviced by the dual mode device via a licensed wireless connection to a wired data line number associated with the dual mode device, the wired data line number serviced by the dual mode device via the unlicensed wireless connection; wherein instructions associated with one or more of the above means are executed by one or more processors operatively coupled to one or more memory devices.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the call comprises at least one of a voice communication or a data communication.
18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the unlicensed wireless connection comprises at least one of a Bluetooth™ connection, a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) HiperLAN connection, or an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11b connection.
19 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the licensed wireless connection comprises at least one of a global system for mobile communications (GSM) connection or a general packet radio service (GPRS) connection.
20 . The system of claim 16 , further comprising:
means for verifying whether a unique subscriber identity associated with the dual mode device is included in a database of a wired data network associated with the unlicensed wireless connection; wherein the means for routing the call comprises means for routing the call based on the means for verifying.
21 . The system of claim 20 , further comprising:
