Abstract

A plurality of icons are displayed on a touch-sensitive display. Two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows on the touch-sensitive display. A space greater than a pre-determined value is included between adjacent rows. A contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to a respective icon is detected. A symbol corresponding to the respective icon is displayed in the space between a respective row corresponding to the respective icon and a neighboring row while the contact is maintained.

1 . A method, comprising:
 at a portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display:
 displaying a plurality of icons on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows on the touch-sensitive display, and wherein a space greater than a pre-determined value is included between adjacent rows; 
 detecting a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to a respective icon; and 
 displaying a symbol corresponding to the respective icon in the space between a respective row corresponding to the respective icon and a neighboring row while the contact is maintained. 
   
   
   
       2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the symbol is the respective icon, and wherein the symbol is magnified relative to the respective icon. 
   
   
       3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the neighboring row is above the respective row. 
   
   
       4 . A computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which when executed by a portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display, cause the portable electronic device to perform a method comprising:
 displaying a plurality of icons on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows on the touch-sensitive display, and wherein a space greater than a pre-determined value is included between adjacent rows;   detecting a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to a respective icon; and   displaying a symbol corresponding to the respective icon in the space between a respective row corresponding to the respective icon and a neighboring row while the contact is maintained.   
   
   
       5 . The computer readable storage medium of  claim 4 , wherein the symbol is the respective icon, and wherein the symbol is magnified relative to the respective icon. 
   
   
       6 . The computer readable storage medium of  claim 4 , wherein the neighboring row is above the respective row. 
   
   
       7 . A graphical user interface on a portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display, a memory, and one or more processors to execute one or more programs stored in the memory, the graphical user interface comprising:
 a plurality of icons displayed on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows on the touch-sensitive display, and wherein a space greater than a pre-determined value is included between adjacent rows; and   a symbol corresponding to a respective icon displayed in the space between a respective row corresponding to the respective icon and a neighboring row, wherein the symbol is displayed when a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to the respective icon is established.   
   
   
       8 . The graphical user interface of  claim 7 , wherein the symbol is the respective icon, and wherein the symbol is magnified relative to the respective icon. 
   
   
       9 . The graphical user interface of  claim 7 , wherein the neighboring row is above the respective row. 
   
   
       10 . A portable electronic device, comprising:
 a touch-sensitive display;   one or more processors;   memory; and   one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including:
 instructions for displaying a plurality of icons on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows on the touch-sensitive display, and wherein a space greater than a pre-determined value is included between adjacent rows; 
 instructions for detecting a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to the respective icon; and 
 instructions for displaying a symbol corresponding to the respective icon in the space between a respective row corresponding to the respective icon and a neighboring row while the contact is maintained. 
   
   
   
       11 . The portable electronic device of  claim 10 , wherein the symbol is the respective icon, and wherein the symbol is magnified relative to the respective icon. 
   
   
       12 . The portable electronic device of  claim 10 , wherein the neighboring row is above the respective row. 
   
   
       13 . A method, comprising:
 at a portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display:
 displaying a plurality of icons on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows; 
 detecting a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to the respective icon; 
 modifying the displaying of the plurality of icons to include a space greater than a pre-determined value between a row corresponding to the respective icon and an adjacent row on the touch-sensitive display while the contact is maintained; and 
 displaying a symbol corresponding to the respective icon in the space while the contact is maintained. 
   
   
   
       14 . A computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which when executed by a portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display, cause the portable electronic device to perform a method comprising:
 displaying a plurality of icons on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows;   detecting a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to the respective icon;   modifying the displaying of the plurality of icons to include a space greater than a pre-determined value between a row corresponding to the respective icon and an adjacent row on the touch-sensitive display while the contact is maintained; and   displaying a symbol corresponding to the respective icon in the space while the contact is maintained.   
   
   
       15 . A portable electronic device, comprising:
 a touch-sensitive display;   one or more processors;   memory; and   one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including:   instructions for displaying a plurality of icons on the touch-sensitive display, wherein two or more subsets of the plurality of icons are arranged in corresponding rows;   instructions for detecting a contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to the respective icon;   instructions for modifying the displaying of the plurality of icons to include a space greater than a pre-determined value between a row corresponding to the respective icon and an adjacent row on the touch-sensitive display while the contact is maintained; and   instructions for displaying a symbol corresponding to the respective icon in the space while the contact is maintained.
