Abstract

A composition that includes at least one crosslinkable monomer; at least one hydrophobic monomer; and at least one dielectric constant enhancing agent selected from dielectric enhancing monomers, ferroelectric particulates, and electroactive polymers. Coatings including the polymer of compositions, and articles including electrically isolating layers are also disclosed.

1 . A composition comprising:
 at least one crosslinkable monomer;   at least one hydrophobic monomer; and   at least one dielectric constant enhancing agent selected from the group consisting of: dielectric enhancing monomers, ferroelectric particulates, electroactive polymers, and combinations thereof.   
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinkable monomer comprises an acrylate monomer, an imide monomer, an urethane monomer, an inorganic monomer, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinkable monomer is a trifunctional, tetrafunctional, pentafunctional, or hexafunctional monomer. 
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinkable monomer is an ethoxylated acrylate monomer. 
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinkable monomer is ethoxylated (15) trimethoylol propane triacrylate, ethoxylated (5) trimethoylol propane tetraacrylate, dipentaerythritol pentacrylate, dipentaerythritol hexaacrylate, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the composition has from about 5% to about 30% crosslinkable monomer by weight of the total composition. 
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one hydrophobic monomer comprises at least five fluorine atoms, an alkyl chain having at least six carbon atoms, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one hydrophobic monomer is pentafluorobenzyl methacrylate, pentafluorophenyl methacrylate, 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropyl acrylate, 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoropentyl methacrylate, 4,4,5,5,6,7,7,7-octacfluoro-2-hydroxy-6-(trifluoromethyl)heptyl methacrylate, 2,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7-dodecafluoroheptyl acrylate, 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9-hexadecafluorononyl acrylate, 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,11,11,12,12,12-eicosafluorodocecyl acrylate, lauryl methacrylate, stearyl methacrylate, or a combination thereof 
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 6  further comprising a second hydrophobic monomer selected from the group consisting of: hexafluoro bisphenol A dimethacrylate, 1H,1H, 6H,6H-octafluoro-1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate, 1H, 1H, 5H, 5H-hexafluoro-1,4-pentanediol dimethacrylate, pentaerythritol diacrylate monostearate, and a combination thereof 
     
     
         10 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 20% to about 85% hydrophobic monomer by weight of the total composition. 
     
     
         11 . The composition of  claim 1 , comprising a dielectric enhancing monomer having a group electronegativity of at least about 2.4. 
     
     
         12 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the dielectric enhancing monomer is selected from the group consisting of pentabromophenyl methacrylate, ethoxylated bisphenol dimethacrylate, tris (2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanurate, furfuryl methacrylate, benzylmethacrylate, 2-cyanoethylacrylate, vinylferrocene, propagyl methacrylate, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         13 . The composition of  claim 1 , comprising from about 10% to about 60% dielectric enhancing monomer by weight of the total composition. 
     
     
         14 . A coating comprising a polymerized product of
 at least one crosslinkable monomer;   at least one hydrophobic monomer; and   at least one dielectric constant enhancing agent selected from the group consisting of: dielectric enhancing monomers, ferroelectric particulates, electroactive polymers, and a combination thereof.   
     
     
         15 . The coating of  claim 14 , wherein the polymerized product has a crosslinking density of at least about 10%. 
     
     
         16 . The coating of  claim 14 , wherein the coating has a contact angle with water of at least about 65°. 
     
     
         17 . The coating of  claim 14 , wherein the coating has a dielectric constant of at least about 2. 
     
     
         18 . An article comprising:
 an electrically isolating layer comprising a polymer comprising:
 at least one crosslinkable monomer; 
 at least one hydrophobic monomer; and 
 at least one dielectric constant enhancing agent selected from the group consisting of: dielectric enhancing monomers, ferroelectric particulates, electroactive polymers, and a combination thereof. 
   
     
     
         19 . The article of  claim 18 , further comprising an electrode, wherein the electrically isolating layer is positioned adjacent to the electrode. 
     
     
         20 . The article of  claim 19 , further comprising an adhesion promoter disposed between the electrode and the electrically isolating layer.
