Abstract

A cosmetic composition comprising a UV-protective amount of at least one rosavin, preferably present in an extract of Rhodiola rosea in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle, and methods of use thereof, including preventing or reducing the signs of photoaging.

1 . A method for reducing UV-induced DNA damages in skin cells comprising applying to the skin a cosmetic composition comprising an effective amount of a  Rhodiola Rosea  extract in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the  Rhodiola Rosea  extract contains from about 0.001% to 0.1% by weight rosavins. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the  Rhodiola Rosea  extract comprises salidrosides, rosavins, rosins, rosarins, or mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the  Rhodiola Rosea  extract further comprises at least from 0.001% to 0.1% of tyrosol. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the cosmetic composition further comprises a mixture of glycerin and butylene glycol. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the cosmetic composition further comprises hyaluronic acid, a hyaluronate, or mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the hyaluronate is sodium hyaluronate. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the cosmetic composition further comprises at least one chelating agent. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the chelating agent is disodium EDTA. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the cosmetic composition further comprises a sugar. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the cosmetic composition further comprises at least one emulsion stabilizer, at least one fragrance, at least one humectant, at least one glycol, and at least one protein. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the at least one humectant comprises glycerin. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the at least one glycol comprises butylene glycol. 
     
     
         14 . A method for arresting, treating, or reversing the process of skin aging comprising applying to the skin a cosmetic composition comprising an effective amount of a  Rhodiola Rosea  extract in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle. 
     
     
         15 . A method for retarding the signs of photoaging and protecting the skin from UV damage comprising applying to the skin a cosmetic composition comprising an effective amount of a  Rhodiola Rosea  extract in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
