Abstract
A method of performing a transaction over a contactless interface placing a first device in wireless communication with a second device, selecting the interface over which the first and second device with communicate, selecting the application to be used to approve or disapprove the transaction, communicating to the second device the data necessary for the application to approve or disapprove the transaction.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method comprising a plurality of steps each being performed by hardware executing software, wherein the steps include:
receiving, at a second device, a wireless communication containing a selection of an application deployed on a first device that is in wireless communication with the second device, wherein the selected application is for a payment service to be utilized in a transaction conducted on an account issued by an issuer; determining capabilities supported by the second device for processing of the transaction; receiving, at the second device, a wireless communication containing a selection of application data in response to the determination of the capabilities supported by the second device for the processing of the transaction; and processing, at the second device, the application data as required by the application to approve or disapprove the transaction.
2 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein:
the first and second devices are in wireless communication; the selection of the desired application is received by the second device; the first device comprises an apparatus selected from the group consisting of:
an integrated circuit card having an antennae for communicating with the second device over a wireless interface.
a cellular telephone;
a personal digital assistant; and
a device comprising:
means for storing application data; and
means for communicating with the second device over a wireless interface;
the second device is selected from the group consisting of:
a reader for receiving data from the first device over a wireless interface;
a point of sale terminal; and
a hardware security key.
3 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first device communicates with the second device by a communication mode selected from the group consisting of radio frequency, infrared communication, and laser communication.
4 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the application data comprises security data.
5 . The method as defined in claim 4 , wherein the security data comprises data for static data authentication.
6 . The method as defined in claim 4 , wherein the security data comprises data for dynamic data authentication.
7 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the step of processing the application data occurs offline.
8 . The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second device receives an application data format for the application data prior to receiving the application data.
9 . The method as defined in claim 1 wherein:
the second device determines an application data format for the application data by parsing the application data to identify the presence of an indicator; and
the presence of the indicator informs the second device whether or not that the application data is formatted for a magnetic stripe transaction.
10 . An non-transient computer readable medium comprising instructions for executing the steps of claim 1 .
11 . A method comprising a plurality of steps each being performed by hardware executing software, wherein the steps include:
receiving, at a second device, a wireless communication containing a selection of an application deployed on a first device that is in wireless communication with the second device, wherein the selected application is for a payment service to be utilized in a transaction conducted on an account issued by an issuer; sending, in a wireless communication from the second device to the first device, an identification of the selected application; receiving, at the second device, a wireless communication containing a request from the first device for the capabilities of the second device for processing of the transaction; and sending, in a wireless communication from the second device to the first device, an identification of the transaction processing capabilities from the second device; receiving, at the second device, a wireless communication containing a selection of application data in response to the determination of the capabilities supported by the second device for the processing of the transaction; and processing, at the second device, the application data as required by the selected application to approve or disapprove the transaction.
12 . The method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the step of receiving, at the second device, the wireless communication containing the selection of the application deployed on the first device that is in wireless communication with the second device further comprises:
receiving, at a second device, a wireless communication from a first device containing a list comprising:
applications supported by the first device; and
a priority indicator for each said application, wherein the priority indicator indicates a preference that an associated said application will be selected for use in performing a transaction;
comparing the applications supported by the first device with one or more said applications that are supported by the second device; and selecting the application mutually supported by the first device and the second device with the highest priority indicator as the application for use in approving or disapproving the transaction, wherein the selected application is for a payment service to be utilized in the transaction that is conducted on an account issued by an issuer.
13 . The method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the step of receiving, at the second device, the wireless communication containing the selection of the application deployed on the first device that is in wireless communication with the second device further comprises:
receiving, at a second device, a wireless communication from a first device containing data identifying the applications supported by the first device; comparing the applications supported by the first device with the applications supported by the second device; outputting a communication containing the mutually supported applications; and receiving a selection of one of the mutually supported applications for the payment service to be utilized in the transaction that is conducted on an account issued by the issuer.
14 . The method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the first device communicates with the second device by wireless communication mode selected from the group consisting of radio frequency, infrared communication, and laser communication.
15 . The method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the step of processing the application data occurs offline.
16 . An non-transient computer readable medium comprising instructions for executing the steps of claim 11 .
17 . A method comprising a plurality of steps, each being performed by hardware executing software, wherein the steps include:
receiving, at a second device that supports one or more applications, a wireless communication containing one or more applications that are supported by a first device, wherein each said application is for a payment service to be utilized in a transaction conducted on an account issued by an issuer; comparing the one or more applications that are supported by the first device to one or more applications that are supported by the second device; outputting a communication containing the mutually supported applications; receiving a selection of a desired application from the mutually supported applications; sending, in a wireless communication from the second device to the first device, an identification of the desired application; and receiving a wireless communication from the first device containing data sufficient for the desired application to approve or disapprove the transaction.
18 . The method as defined in claim 17 , wherein:
the selection of the desired application is received by the second device; the first device comprises an apparatus selected from the group consisting of:
an integrated circuit card having an antennae for communicating with the second device over a wireless interface.
a cellular telephone;
a personal digital assistant; and
a device comprising:
means for storing application data; and
means for communicating with the second device over a wireless interface;
the second device is selected from the group consisting of:
a reader for receiving data from the first device over a wireless interface;
a point of sale terminal; and
a hardware security key.
19 . The method as defined in claim 17 , wherein the first device communicates with the second device by wireless communication mode selected from the group consisting of radio frequency, infrared communication, and laser communication.
20 . An non-transient computer readable medium comprising instructions for executing the steps of claim 17 .Cited by (0)
