Abstract
A refractive intraocular lens ( 104 ) and method of locating the lens within the eye and attaching the lens to the iris. The refractive intraocular lens ( 104 ) may be attached via a staple ( 230 ), a fastener ( 312 ), anchor ( 412 ) or by the tip of the haptic ( 118 ). The intraocular lens ( 104 ) works in combination with the human crystalline lens to treat conditions selected from the group consisting of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

3 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 2 wherein the fixation means is selected from the group comprising: staple, screws, barbed hooks, or anchors.
4 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 1 wherein the preselected optical effect is for a treatment selected from the group comprising presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.
5 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 1 , wherein the optic is foldable and adapted to be inserted into the eye with incision techniques which reduce trauma to tissues of the eye.

a) an optic for producing a preselected optical effect, the optic having an anterior side, a posterior side and an outer peripheral edge; b) a haptic connected to the optic, the haptic including a riser for maintaining the optic in spaced relation away from an iris and being adapted to be attached to an anterior side of the iris to avoid interfering with muscles that control opening and closing of a pupil; and c) an iris fixation means for connecting the haptic to the anterior side of the iris wherein the iris fixation means penetrates at least a portion of, but less than the entire thickness of the iris.
7 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 6 wherein the iris fixation means is selected from the group comprising staples, screws, clips or anchors.
8 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 6 wherein the optic refractive optical effect is for treatment of conditions selected from the group comprising myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia or astigmatism.
9 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 6 wherein the optic refractive effect is for treatment of presbyopia in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia.
10 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 6 , wherein the optic is foldable and adapted to be inserted into the eye with incision techniques which reduce trauma to tissues of the eye.
11 . A refractive intraocular lens adapted to be inserted and fixated in an eye, the refractive intraocular lens characterized by its ability to be inserted in and removed from the eye, comprising:
a) an optic for producing a preselected optical effect, the optic having an anterior side, a posterior side and an outer peripheral edge; b) at least one haptic connected to the optic, the at least one haptic extending outward from the optic; and c) a flexible staple operatively associated with the haptic and being adapted to overlay and straddle a portion of the haptic in order to attach the refractive intraocular lens to an anterior side of an iris; whereby the refractive intraocular lens is implanted in the eye upon attachment of the staple into the anterior side of the iris; and wherein the staple is adapted to attach to the anterior side of the iris so as to avoid interfering with sphincter and dilator muscles that control opening and closing of the iris.
12 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 1 wherein the staple is adapted to be deformed and when placed in contact with the surface of the iris, the staple penetrates into the iris, thus adapted to attach the refractive intraocular lens to the iris and fixing the position of the refractive intraocular lens thereon.
13 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 11 wherein the haptic includes a riser for maintaining the optic in spaced relation from the iris.
14 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 11 wherein the optic is foldable, whereby the refractive intraocular lens is inserted with small incision techniques which reduces trauma to eye tissues.
15 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 11 wherein the optic is selected for treatment of conditions selected from the group comprising myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia.
16 . The refractive intraocular lens according to claim 11 wherein the preselected optical effect is for treatment of presbyopia in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia.
17 . A refractive intraocular lens adapted to be inserted and fixated in an eye to work in conjunction with a human crystalline lens, the refractive intraocular lens characterized by its ability to be inserted in and removed from the eye, comprising:
a) an optic for producing a preselected optical effect, the optic having an anterior side, a posterior side and an outer peripheral edge; b) at least one haptic connected to the optic, the at least one haptic including a riser extending outward from the optic; and c) a flexible staple operatively associated with the haptic and being adapted to overlay and straddle a portion of the haptic in order to attach the refractive intraocular lens to an anterior side of an iris; whereby the refractive intraocular lens is implanted in the eye upon penetration of the staple into the anterior side of the iris; and
