Printing press with mechanical development of imaged plate
Abstract
On-press development of an imaged printing plate on a plate cylinder, in which ink is applied by an ink form roll, a blanket roll is in contact with the plate, a rubber roll is opposed to the blanket roll, and printable media passes between the blanket roll and the rubber roll. The plate comprises a substrate carrying an imaged coating, in which nonimage areas have cohesion C 1 , adhesion to the substrate A 1 , and adhesion to the applied ink A 3 and image areas have cohesion C 2 , adhesion to the substrate A 2 , and adhesion to the applied ink A 4 . The ink has cohesion C 3 and adhesion A 5 to the blanket roll. The nonimage areas have adhesion A 6 to the printable medium and the ink has adhesion A 7 to the medium. The adhesions and cohesions are such that the blanket roll pulls the ink from the plate and the ink pulls the nonimage areas from the substrate as undissolved particles that are transferred by the blanket with the ink to the printable media.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A lithographic printing press having an imaged printing plate mounted on a plate cylinder, ink applied on the entire coating by an ink form roll in contact with the plate on the plate cylinder, a fountain fluid distributor opposed to the plate cylinder adjacent the ink form roll, a blanket roll in contact with the plate on the plate cylinder, a rubber roll opposed to the blanket roll, and printable media between the blanket roll and the rubber roll, wherein
(a) the plate comprises a substrate carrying an imaged coating, in which nonimage areas have internal cohesion C 1 , adhesion to the substrate A 1 , and adhesion to the applied ink A 3 and image areas have internal cohesion C 2 , adhesion to the substrate A 2 , and adhesion to the applied ink A 4 ; (d) the ink has cohesion C 3 and adhesion A 5 to the blanket roll; (e) the nonimage areas of the coating have adhesion A 6 to the printable medium and the ink has adhesion A 7 to the printable medium, whereby the adhesions and cohesions are such that the blanket roll pulls the ink from the plate and the ink pulls the nonimage areas from the substrate as undissolved particles that are transferred by the blanket with the ink to the printable media.
2 . The printing press of claim 1 , wherein
the ink form roll but not the fountain distributor are active; and the printable media is a waste leader.
3 . The printing press of claim 12 , wherein a water processor is situated upstream of the printing press, said water processor having
a source of water and a mechanical device which together remove at least 95% of the nonimage areas from the substrate as undissolved particles; a basin that captures the water with the removed particles therein; and a recirculation system including filter, to convey the water with removed particles from the basin to the filter and recirculate filtered water back to the water source at a rate that maintains the water in the source in a substantially particle-free state.
4 . The printing press of claim 1 , wherein the relationship of the adhesions and cohesions is defined by the following table, in which X/Y is to be understood as value X> or <value Y and the Ai and Ci row and column headings are the adhesions and cohesions as described with respect to FIGS. 8-10 :
