Abstract
A golf ball comprising a core and at least one layer disposed about the core, wherein at least one of the core and the layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising at least one isocyanate and a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester formed from reactants comprising at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater. Also, a golf ball comprising a core and at least one layer disposed about the core wherein at least one of the core and the layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition T comprising a reaction product of a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer P comprising at least one isocyanate and a curative C comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine D and at least one polyaspartic ester formed from reactants comprising at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition T has a gel time X such that X>1.25Y, and wherein Y is the gel time of a thermoplastic or thermoset composition T′ comprising a reaction product of the polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer P and a curative C′ comprising a blend of aliphatic diamine D and a polyaspartic ester consisting of N,N′-diethylmaleate-2-methyl-pentamethylene diamine.

a core; and at least one layer disposed about the core; wherein at least one of the core and the layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising at least one isocyanate and (b) a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester formed from reactants comprising at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater.
2 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the layer is a cover layer and the cover layer comprises the thermoplastic or thermoset composition.
3 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the layer is an intermediate layer disposed between the core and a cover and the intermediate layer comprises the thermoplastic or thermoset composition.
4 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 100 seconds or greater.
5 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 120 seconds or greater.
6 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of from about 90 seconds to about 200 seconds.
7 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the polyaspartic ester is formed from reactants further comprising at least one catalyst selected from the group comprising iron chloride, lithium perchlorate, and zirconium oxychloride.
8 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the aliphatic diamine is selected from the group comprising 4,4′-bis(sec-butylamino)-dicyclohexylmethane and 3,3′-dimethyl-4-amino-4′-(sec-butylamino)-dicyclohexylmethane.
9 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the maleic ester comprises a linear or branched hydrocarbon chain having 1-18 carbon atoms (C 1 -C 18 ).
10 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the fumaric ester comprises a linear or branched hydrocarbon chain having 1-18 carbon atoms (C 1 -C 18 ).
11 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the at least one polyaspartic ester is present in an amount sufficient to impart a thermoplastic or thermoset composition gel time of about 100 seconds or greater.
12 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the polyaspartic ester is present in an amount sufficient to impart a thermoplastic or thermoset composition gel time of about 120 seconds or greater.
13 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the polyaspartic ester is present in an amount sufficient to impart a thermoplastic or thermoset composition gel time of from about 90 seconds to about 200 seconds.
14 . A golf ball comprising:
a core; at least one intermediate layer surrounding the core; and at least one cover layer surrounding the at least one intermediate layer; wherein at least one of the intermediate layer and cover layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising at least one isocyanate, and (b) a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester formed from reactants comprising at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater.
15 . A golf ball comprising:
a core comprising at least one core layer; and at least one outer layer disposed about the core; wherein at least one of the core layer and the outer layer comprises a then thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising at least one isocyanate, and (b) a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester formed from reactants comprising at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater.
16 . A golf ball comprising:
a core; and at least one layer disposed about the core; wherein at least one of the core and the layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising at least one isocyanate and (b) a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester comprising a reaction product of at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater.
17 . A golf ball comprising:
a core; at least one intermediate layer surrounding the core; and at least one cover layer surrounding the at least one intermediate layer; wherein at least one of the intermediate layer and cover layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising (a) at least one isocyanate and (b) a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester comprising a reaction product of at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater.
18 . A golf ball comprising:
a core comprising at least one core layer; and at least one outer layer disposed about the core; wherein at least one of the core layer and the outer layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer comprising at least one isocyanate and (b) a curative comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine and at least one polyaspartic ester comprising a reaction product of at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, and wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition comprises a gel time of about 90 seconds or greater.
19 . A golf ball comprising:
a core; and at least one layer disposed about the core; wherein at least one of the core and the layer comprises a thermoplastic or thermoset composition T comprising a reaction product of (a) a polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer P comprising at least one isocyanate and (b) a curative C comprising a blend of at least one aliphatic diamine D and at least one polyaspartic ester formed from reactants comprising at least one aliphatic primary polyamine and at least one maleic or fumaric diester, wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition T has a gel time X such that X>1.25Y, and wherein Y is the gel time of a thermoplastic or thermoset composition T′ comprising a reaction product of the polyurethane or polyurea prepolymer P and a curative C′ comprising a blend of aliphatic diamine D and a polyaspartic ester consisting of N,N′-diethylmaleate-2-methyl-pentamethylene diamine.
19 . The golf ball of claim 19 , wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition T has a gel time X>1.75Y.
20 . The golf ball of claim 19 , wherein the thermoplastic or thermoset composition T has a gel time X>2.25Y.
