Navigation device and method for conveying information relationships
Abstract
A method and device are disclosed for conveying information relationships. In one embodiment, the method includes prompting, in a navigation device, at least one of input and selection of a travel destination and a desired arrival time at the travel destination; calculating an arrival time during travel to the travel destination; and outputting via the navigation device, during travel to the travel destination, an indication of a relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time. In another embodiment, the method includes inputting a travel destination on a navigation device; determining a travel route to the input travel destination; calculating a speed in a navigation device during travel to the travel destination along the determined route; and outputting, via the navigation device, an indication of a relationship between a permitted speed and the calculated speed.

prompting, in a navigation device, at least one of input and selection of a travel destination and a desired arrival time at the travel destination; calculating an arrival time during travel to the travel destination; and outputting via the navigation device, during travel to the travel destination, an indication of a relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication includes a visual display.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication includes a color display, the color conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display, the numerical display conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display, the numerical display conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication includes a color display including at least one of a red, yellow and green color, the red color conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time, the yellow color conveying an expected relatively on-time arrival in relation to the desired arrival time, and the green color conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.

The method of claim 6 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display including at least one of a negative indicator being paired with the red color, conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time and a positive indicator being paired with the green color, conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication includes an audible output.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the navigation device further outputs map information, the indication between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time being output in conjunction with the map information.
10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the navigation device further displays map information, the indication between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time being displayed in conjunction with the map information.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication is updated upon a difference between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time exceeding a threshold.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication is changed upon a difference between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time changing.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the output indication is updated periodically.
14 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the green color is displayed when the calculated arrival time exceeds the desired arrival time by at least a first number of minutes, wherein the yellow color is displayed when the calculated arrival time exceeds the desired arrival time by a number of minutes between zero minutes and the first number of minutes, and wherein the red color is displayed when the calculated arrival time is less than the desired arrival time.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display including at least one of a negative indicator being paired with the red color, conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time and a positive indicator being paired with the green color, conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.
16 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the navigation device further outputs map information, the indication between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time being output in conjunction with the map information.
17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the navigation device further outputs map information, the indication between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time being output in conjunction with the map information.
18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the navigation device further outputs map information, the indication between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time being output in conjunction with the map information.
19 . A navigation device, comprising:
means for prompting at least one of input and selection of a travel destination and a desired an arrival time; means for calculating an arrival time during travel to the travel destination; and means for outputting, during travel to the travel destination, an indication of a relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
20 . The navigation device of claim 19 , wherein the means for outputting includes a display device.
21 . The navigation device of claim 20 , wherein the output indication includes a color display, the color conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
22 . The navigation device of claim 20 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display, the numerical display conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
23 . The navigation device of claim 21 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display, the numerical display conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
24 . The navigation device of claim 20 , wherein the output indication includes a color display including at least one of a red, yellow and green color, the red color conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time, the yellow color conveying an expected relatively on-time arrival in relation to the desired arrival time, and the green color conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.

The navigation device of claim 24 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display including at least one of a negative indicator being paired with the red color, conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time and a positive indicator being paired with the green color, conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.
26 . The navigation device of claim 19 , wherein the output indication is changed upon a difference between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time changing.
27 . The navigation device of claim 24 , wherein the green color is displayed when the calculated arrival time exceeds the desired arrival time by at least a first number of minutes, wherein the yellow color is displayed when the calculated arrival time exceeds the desired arrival time by a number of minutes between zero minutes and the first number of minutes, and wherein the red color is displayed when the calculated arrival time is less than the desired arrival time.

The navigation device of claim 27 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display including at least one of a negative indicator being paired with the red color, conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time and a positive indicator being paired with the green color, conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.
29 . A navigation device, comprising:
an integrated input and display device to prompt at least one of input and selection of a travel destination and a desired arrival time; and a processor to calculate an arrival time during travel to the travel destination, the integrated input and display device being used to further output, during travel to the travel destination, an indication of a relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
30 . The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the output indication includes a color display, the color conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
31 . The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display, the numerical display conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.
32 . The navigation device of claim 30 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display, the numerical display conveying at least one of a positive, negative and neutral relationship between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time.

The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the output indication includes a color display including at least one of a red, yellow and green color, the red color conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time, the yellow color conveying an expected relatively on-time arrival in relation to the desired arrival time, and the green color conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.

The navigation device of claim 33 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display including at least one of a negative indicator being paired with the red color, conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time and a positive indicator being paired with the green color, conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.
35 . The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the output indication is changed upon a difference between the desired arrival time and the calculated arrival time changing.

The navigation device of claim 33 , wherein the green color is displayed when the calculated arrival time exceeds the desired arrival time by at least a first number of minutes, wherein the yellow color is displayed when the calculated arrival time exceeds the desired arrival time by a number of minutes between zero minutes and the first number of minutes, and wherein the red color is displayed when the calculated arrival time is less than the desired arrival time.

The navigation device of claim 36 , wherein the output indication includes a numerical display including at least one of a negative indicator being paired with the red color, conveying an expected relatively delayed arrival in relation to the desired arrival time and a positive indicator being paired with the green color, conveying an expected relatively early arrival in relation to the desired arrival time.
38 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the prompting of at least one of input and selection of a desired arrival time includes displaying an estimated arrival time, estimated based upon the at least one of input and selected travel destination.
39 . The navigation device of claim 19 , wherein the means for prompting of at least one of input and selection of a desired arrival time includes displaying an estimated arrival time, estimated based upon the at least one of input and selected travel destination.
40 . The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the integrated input and display device is further used to display an estimated arrival time, estimated based upon the at least one of input and selected travel destination.
41 . A computer readable medium including program segments for, when executed on a processor of a navigation device, causing the navigation device to implement the method of claim 1 .
42 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
prompting, for selection, a preference to prompt at least one of input and selection of a desired arrival time subsequent to at least one of input and selection of the travel destination, wherein upon selection of the preference, input of the desired arrival time is prompted subsequent to at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.
43 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
prompting, for selection, an option to at least one of enable and disable the automatic prompting of at least one of input and selection of the desired arrival time, subsequent to the at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.
44 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the prompting includes automatically prompting at least one of input and selection of the desired arrival time, subsequent to the at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.

The navigation device of claim 19 , wherein the means for prompting is further for prompting, for selection, a preference to prompt at least one of input and selection of a desired arrival time subsequent to at least one of input and selection of the travel destination, wherein upon selection of the preference, the means for prompting prompts input of the desired arrival time subsequent to at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.

The navigation device of claim 19 , wherein the means for prompting is further for prompting, for selection, an option to at least one of enable and disable the automatic prompting of at least one of input and selection of the desired arrival time, subsequent to the at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.
47 . The navigation device of claim 19 , wherein the means for prompting is further for automatically prompting at least one of input and selection of the desired arrival time, subsequent to the at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.

The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the integrated input and display device is further used to prompt, for selection, a preference to prompt at least one of input and selection of a desired arrival time subsequent to atleast one of input and selection of the travel destination, wherein upon selection of the preference, the integrated input and display device is further used to prompt input of the desired arrival time subsequent to at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.

The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the integrated input and display device is further used to prompt selection of an option to at least one of enable and disable the automatic prompting of at least one of input and selection of the desired arrival time, subsequent to the at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.
50 . The navigation device of claim 29 , wherein the integrated input and display device is further used to automatically prompt at least one of input and selection of the desired arrival time, subsequent to the at least one of input and selection of the travel destination.Cited by (0)
