Abstract
There is described a multi-layer film. The film comprises a biodegradable layer and a metallised layer, wherein the biodegradable layer comprises a biopolymer selected from the group consisting of carbohydrates, polysaccharides, gums, proteins, colloids, polyorganic acids and mixtures thereof.

12 . A multi-layer film, comprising:
a biodegradable layer; and a metallised layer, wherein said biodegradable layer comprises a biopolymer selected from the group consisting of carbohydrates, polysaccharides, gums, proteins, colloids, polyorganic acids and mixtures thereof.
13 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , wherein said polyorganic acids include polylactic acid (PLA) and polygalactic acid (PGA).
14 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , wherein said biopolymer comprises PLA.
15 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , wherein said polysaccharides include starch, cellulose, glycogen, hemi-cellulose, chitin, fructan inulin, lignin, pectic substances and polysaccharide derivatives.
16 . The multi-layer film of claim 15 , wherein said polysaccharide derivatives include amino derivatives, ester derivatives, ether derivatives and oxidised derivatives of polysaccharide.
17 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , wherein said biopolymer comprises cellulose.
18 . The multi-layer film of claim 17 , wherein said cellulose is regenerated cellulose.
19 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , wherein said biopolymer comprises starch.
20 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , wherein said biopolymer layer further comprises a plasticiser.
21 . The multi-layer film of claim 20 , wherein said plasticiser is present in an amount from about 10% to about 30% by weight of said biopolymer layer.
22 . The multi-layer film of claim 20 , wherein said plasticiser is selected from the group consisting of glycols, urea, sorbitol, glycerol and mixtures thereof.
23 . The multi-layer film of claim 12 , further comprising an adhesive layer.
24 . The multi-layer film of claim 23 , wherein said adhesive layer comprises an adhesive dispersed in an aqueous medium.
25 . The multi-layer film of claim 23 , further comprising a printable coating.
26 . The multi-layer film of claim 25 , further comprising an ink layer printed on said printable coating.
27 . The multi-layer film of claim 26 , wherein said ink layer is in contact with said adhesive layer.
28 . The multi-layer film of claim 26 , wherein said ink layer and said adhesive layer are separated by said biodegradable layer.
29 . A multi-layer film, comprising:
a PLA layer; a metallised layer; an adhesive layer; and. a printable coating.
30 . The multi-layer film of claim 29 , wherein said metallised layer and said adhesive layer are on the same side of said PLA layer.
