Abstract

A system is provided for monitoring glucose in a host, including a continuous glucose sensor that produces a data stream indicative of a host's glucose concentration and an integrated receiver that receives the data stream from the continuous glucose sensor and calibrates the data stream using a single point glucose monitor that is integral with the integrated receiver. The integrated receiver obtains a glucose value from the single point glucose monitor, calibrates the sensor data stream received from the continuous glucose sensor, and displays one or both of the single point glucose measurement values and the calibrated continuous glucose sensor values on the user interface.

1 . An integrated system comprising:
 a continuous glucose sensor configured to continuously measure a glucose concentration in a host, wherein the continuous glucose sensor generates continuous glucose sensor data associated with the glucose concentration in the host; and   a receiver comprising a single point glucose monitor physically attached thereto, wherein the receiver is configured to communicate with the continuous glucose sensor and to receive the continuous glucose sensor data based on a value obtained from the single point glucose monitor, and wherein the receiver is further configured to communicate with an insulin delivery device and to process and transmit insulin administration information to the insulin delivery device based at least in part on a predicted glucose concentration and a rate of change of glucose concentration.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein each of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise a sensing membrane comprising an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor are substantially the same. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the single point glucose monitor is configured to receive a single use test strip. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises programming to control time and/or amount of administration of insulin to the host. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , further comprising an insulin delivery device. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 5 , wherein the insulin delivery device comprises an insulin pump, and wherein the receiver is further configured to process and transmit insulin administration information to the insulin delivery device based at least in part the glucose concentration measured by the continuous glucose sensor. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the programming to control time and/or amount of administration of insulin to the host comprises programming to control administration of insulin to the host based at least in part on the rate of change of the continuous glucose sensor data. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the programming to control time and/or amount of administration of insulin to the host comprises programming to control administration of insulin to the host based at least in part on the directional trend of the continuous glucose sensor data. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver is configured to monitor the continuous glucose sensor data to adaptively determine a time for requesting a biological sample. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a user interface, and wherein the receiver is configured to prompt the user, via the user interface, to provide a biological sample to the single point glucose monitor at predetermined intervals. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a user interface, and wherein the receiver is configured to prompt the user, via the user interface, to provide a biological sample to the single point glucose monitor based upon one or more events. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the one or more events comprise one or more events selected from the group consisting of meals, exercise, large excursions in glucose levels, faulty data readings, and interrupted data readings. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein receiver is configured to compare the value obtained from the single point glucose monitor with one or more acceptability parameters. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a user interface, and wherein the receiver is configured to display the value obtained from the single point glucose monitor and the continuous glucose sensor data from the continuous glucose sensor on the user interface. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a user interface, and wherein the receiver is configured to simultaneously display the single point value and a graphical representation of the continuous glucose sensor data. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a user interface, and wherein the receiver is configured to selectively display the single point value and the continuous glucose sensor data responsive to user interaction. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a processor module configured to automatically receive the single point glucose sensor data without user interaction. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the predicted value is an estimated glucose value configured to compensate for a time lag. 
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver is configured to calibrate the continuous glucose sensor data. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 1 , further comprising electronics configured to calibrate the continuous glucose sensor data.
