Abstract

A method for tagging digital media is described. The method includes selecting a digital media and selecting region within the digital media. The method may further include associating a person or entity with the selected region and sending a notification of the association the person or entity or a different person or entity. The method may further include sending advertising with the notification.

1 . A method comprising:
 receiving from a device of a first user a selection of an item of digital media, wherein the item of digital media is stored in a database;   receiving from the device of the first user an identification of a person associated with the selected item of digital media;   receiving a selection of the item of digital media from a device of a second user; and   responsive to receiving the selection of the item of digital media from the device of the second user, displaying the item of digital media with a tag for the person identified in connection with the item of digital media, wherein the tag comprises a hyperlink.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with the person in a social networking system. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising responsive to receiving the information identifying the person, generating a notification to a third user that the person has been identified in connection with the item of digital media. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising
 receiving from the device of a first user a selection of a region of the item of digital media to be associated with the person associated with the selected item of digital media; 
 receiving a user interaction with the tag from the device of the second user; and 
 responsive to receiving the user interaction with the tag, displaying on the item of digital media an indication of the region within the item of digital media associated with the person. 
 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with the person. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising enabling the identified person to validate the identification, wherein the identified person is different from the first user. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the notification comprises an electronic message. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the item of digital media comprises a digital image. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the third user is the person who has been associated with the item of digital media, whereby the person associated with the item of digital media is notified of the identification. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the third user is a person other than the person who has been associated with the item of digital media. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein sending the notification that the person has been identified further comprises:
 receiving contact information of the person from a server computer; and   sending the notification to the person using the received contact information.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 3 , further comprising:
 receiving a message from the person rejecting the identification;   responsive to receiving the message, removing the identification of the person in connection with the item of digital media.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 3 , further comprising:
 receiving a message from the person rejecting the identification;   responsive to receiving the message, disabling display of the tag for the person identified in connection with the item of digital media.   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13  wherein the display of the tag is disabled for all users except the first user. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 determining whether the identified person is a user of a social networking system; and   responsive to determining that the identified person is not a user of the social networking system, generating an invitation to the person to join or use the social networking system.   
     
     
         16 . A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing computer program code for:
 receiving from a device of a first user a selection of an item of digital media, wherein the item of digital media is stored in a database;   receiving from the device of the first user an identification of a person associated with the selected item of digital media;   receiving a selection of the item of digital media from a device of a second user; and   responsive to receiving the selection of the item of digital media from the device of the second user, displaying the item of digital media with a tag for the person identified in connection with the item of digital media, wherein the tag comprises a hyperlink.   
     
     
         17 . The computer program product of  claim 16  wherein the hyperlink links to information associates with the person in a social networking system. 
     
     
         18 . The computer program product of  claim 16  wherein the medium further contains computer program code for: responsive to receiving the information identifying the person, generating a notification to a third user that the person has been identified in connection with the item of digital media. 
     
     
         19 . The computer program product of  claim 16  wherein the medium further contains computer program code for:
 receiving from the device of a first user a selection of a region of the item of digital media to be associated with the person associated with the selected item of digital media; 
 receiving a user interaction with the tag from the device of the second user; and 
 responsive to receiving the user interaction with the tag, displaying on the item of digital media an indication of the region within the item of digital media associated with the person. 
 
     
     
         20 . The computer program product of  claim 16  wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with the person. 
     
     
         21 . The computer program product of  claim 16  wherein the medium further contains computer program code for: enabling the identified person to validate the identification, wherein the identified user is different from the first user. 
     
     
         22 . The computer program product of  claim 18 , wherein the notification comprises an electronic message. 
     
     
         23 . A method comprising:
 receiving from a device of a first user of a social networking system a selection of an item of digital media, wherein the item of digital media is stored in a database;   receiving from the device of the first user an identification of an object associated with the selected item of digital media; and   responsive to receiving the information identifying the object, generating a notification to one or more users of the social networking system that the object has been identified in connection with the item of digital media.
