Abstract

Methods and products for analyzing polymers are provided. The methods include methods for determining various other structural properties of the polymers.

         161 . A method for identifying an individual unit of a polymer of linked units, comprising:
 transiently exposing an individual unit of a polymer of linked units to an agent comprising electromagnetic radiation, wherein the individual unit is linked to a unit specific marker;   generating a detectable FRET-independent electromagnetic radiation signal characteristic of said individual unit;   detecting said signal; and   distinguishing said signal from one or more signals generated from adjacent signal generating units of the polymer.   
     
     
         162 . The method of  claim 161 , wherein the unit specific marker includes a fluorescent label. 
     
     
         163 . The method of  claim 161 , wherein the unit specific marker comprises a labeled nucleotide that is linked to the individual unit of the polymer via hydrogen bonds.
