Abstract

The invention relates to a laminar textile material for covering a pasty active mass on a battery electrode. The invention further relates to a battery electrode having such a material, to a battery, and to a method for producing battery electrodes. Potential improvements of lead batteries are disclosed that are more practical than previously known solutions, and that stabilize the pasty active mass on the battery electrodes. A laminar textile materiel is disclosed to this end, comprising glass fibers and fibers made of a thermoplastic plastic, e.g. polyester.

A textile sheetlike material comprising glass fibers and fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer, wherein the textile sheetlike material is adapted to cover a pasty active mass on a planar, plate-shaped battery electrode which includes a grid of the electrode material, arranged in a frame, wherein at least one of the glass fibers or the fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer are finely fibrous having a diameter of less than 6 μm.

2 . The textile sheetlike material of claim 1 , wherein one of the glass fibers and the fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer are finely fibrous having a diameter of less than 6 μm.

3 . The textile sheetlike material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer include polyester fibers.

4 . The textile sheetlike material of claim 3 , wherein the fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer have a weight fraction of 5 to 25 percent.

5 . The textile sheetlike material of claim 4 , wherein a binder is provided to consolidate the fibers.

6 . The textile sheetlike material of claim 5 , wherein the binder is an acid-resistant acrylate binder.

7 . The textile sheetlike material of claim 5 , wherein the binder has a weight fraction of 5 to 25 percent.

8 . A planar, plate-shaped battery electrode comprising a planar electrode grid provided in a frame, wherein the electrode grid is coated with a pasty active mass and the active mass is covered with a covering layer of a textile sheetlike material, the covering layer includes glass fibers and fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer, wherein at least one of the glass fibers or the fibers composed of a thermoplastic polymer are finely fibrous having a diameter of less than 6 um.

9 . The battery electrode of claim 8 , wherein the electrode is a lead electrode.

10 . The battery electrode of claim 8 , wherein the electrode is provided in a starter battery for a vehicle.

11 . The battery electrode of claim 10 , wherein the starter battery for a vehicle includes an electrolyte of liquid sulfuric acid.
