Abstract
The invention relates to a device for preserving, sanitizing, ripening, and preventing or suppressing the growth of microbials within a package used for the transport and storage of various items, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and other perishables and parcels. The device includes an enclosed container and at least one sack operably disposed adjacent the container, wherein the sack encloses an agent and the agent releases gases in the container upon the presence of humidity within the container.

a container; and, at least one sack having an agent disposed therein and being disposed adjacent to the container, and the sack being operably configured to release an agent within the container.
2 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the container is a modified atmosphere package and the releasing of the agent is based upon the humidity of within the container.
3 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one agent releasable sack is disposed within container.
4 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein container includes a lid and the at least one agent releasable sack is dispose on the lid.
5 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is chlorine dioxide.
6 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is ethylene.
7 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is nitrogen.
8 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is an insecticide.
9 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the container is a non-rigid container.
10 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , further including a second sack having a second agent disposed therein, wherein the agent disposed within the at least one sack is different from the second agent.

The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , further including a first chamber within a second chamber, wherein both the first and second chambers have orifices and the at least one agent releasable sack is disposed within the first chamber, and the second chamber is disposed within container.
12 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 11 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is sulfur dioxide.
13 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the container further includes a lid and the lid includes a recess, wherein the at least one agent releasable sack is disposed within the recess.
14 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 13 , further including a second agent releasable sack, wherein both the first and the second agent releasable sacks are disposed within the recess on the lid.
15 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the container further includes a lid and the lid includes a first and second recess, wherein the at least one agent releasable sack is disposed within the first recess and a second agent releasable sack is disposed within the second recess.
16 . The packaging system, as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a valve, wherein the valve is operably configured to release a gas from within the enclosed container.
17 . A food packaging device comprising:
a modified atmosphere package, having a lid with a recess; and, at least one agent releasable sack disposed within the recess and operably configured to release an agent within the modified atmosphere package.
18 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is chlorine dioxide.
19 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is ethylene.
20 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is nitrogen.
21 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is an insecticide.
22 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 21 , wherein the insecticide is sulfur dioxide.
23 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , further including a second agent releasable sack, wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is chlorine dioxide and the agent within second agent releasable sack is sulfur dioxide.
24 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , further including a second agent releasable sack, wherein both the first and the second agent releasable sacks are disposed within the recess on the lid.
25 . The food packaging device, as recited in claim 17 , further including a valve operably configured to release a gas from within the container.
26 . A releasing device for releasing an agent within a container, comprising:
a first chamber having a plurality of orifices, wherein the agent is disposed within the first chamber; a second chamber having a plurality of orifices, wherein the first chamber is disposed within the second chamber; and, wherein the second chamber is disposed within the container.
27 . The releasing device, as recited in claim 26 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is chlorine dioxide.
28 . The releasing device, as recited in claim 26 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is ethylene.
29 . The releasing device, as recited in claim 26 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is nitrogen.
30 . The releasing device, as recited in claim 26 , wherein the agent within at least one agent releasable sack is an insecticide.
31 . The releasing device, as recited in claim 30 , wherein the insecticide is sulfur dioxide.
32 . A method of packaging comprising the steps of:
obtaining a container operably configured to enclosably hold products; placing the products within the container; obtaining at least one agent releasable sachet operably configured to release an agent within the container; attaching the at least one agent releasable sachet so that the agent is release into the container.
33 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the agent within the releasable sachet is sulfur dioxide.
34 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the agent within the releasable sachet is chlorine dioxide.
35 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the container is a modified atmosphere package.
36 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the modified atmosphere package further includes a lid and the at least one agent releasable sachet disposed on the lid.
37 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the container is a modified atmosphere package having a lid, wherein the lid includes at least one recess and the at least one agent releasable sachet is disposed within the at least one recess.
38 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the container is a modified atmosphere bag.
39 . The method of packaging, as recited in claim 38 , further including a first chamber disposed within a second chamber and the at least one agent releasable sachet is disposed within the first chamber, and the second chamber is disposed within the modified atmosphere bag.
