Abstract
The present invention provides an antimicrobial composition comprising compounds extracted from the vegetation liquor of the palm oil milling process has been suggested. This composition is rich in antioxidants and exhibits enhanced antimicrobial activity and bactericidal effect against a number of micro-organisms.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . An antimicrobial composition comprising compounds extracted from the vegetation liquor of the palm oil milling process wherein said composition slows or arrests the growth of one or more microorganisms.
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is rich in antioxidants.
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said compounds from the vegetation liquor of the palm oil milling process comprise one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of phenolic compounds, fruit acids, fruit sugars and glycerol.
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said composition exhibits an inhibitory effect against micro-organisms as measured by the disc diffusion method of antimicrobial susceptibility.
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is bactericidal or bacteriostatic against gram positive and/or gram negative bacteria.
. (canceled)
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is devoid of adverse drug reactions in a patient in need thereof.
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is in substantially pure form.
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is incorporated in pharmaceutical formulations for treatment of one or more diseases or infections.
. (canceled)
. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises additional components which do not materially affect the properties of the composition.
. A method for obtaining an antimicrobial composition comprising extracting compounds from the vegetation liquor of the palm oil milling process with a suitable solvent, wherein said composition slows or arrests the growth of one or more microorganisms.
. The method of claim 12 further comprising separating the extract from the supernatant.
. The method of claim 13 further comprising removing the solvent from the extract.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said compounds are extracted from the vegetation liquor using one or more suitable solvents selected from the group consisting of ethanol, methanol, acetone, ethyl acetate and butanol.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said compounds are enriched using membrane filtration technology.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said compounds from the vegetation liquor of the palm oil milling process comprise one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of phenolic compounds, fruit acids, fruit sugars and glycerol.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said composition is rich in antioxidants.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said composition is devoid of adverse drug reactions in a patient in need thereof.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said composition is in substantially pure form.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said composition further comprises additional components which do not materially affect the properties of the composition.
. The method of claim 12 wherein said composition is incorporated in pharmaceutical formulations for treatment of one or more diseases or infections.Cited by (0)
