Abstract
A personal computer connected to the Internet can receive and store data or programming from the Internet. This programming can be provided by the computer over a digital connection to content reproduction devices located away from the computer at a location convenient for a user. A remote control unit allows the user to send signals back over the digital connection to the computer to control the computer to provide the programming that the user desires over the digital connection to the content reproduction device(s) located where the user is. The computer may send a listing of the available programming to the remote control unit from which the user can make selections.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A system for managing content, the system comprising:
a transceiver for making a digital connection between a content reproduction device and a server over which said server provides a signal to said content reproduction device; and a remote control unit, wherein said remote control unit controls output of said signal from said server to said content reproduction device; wherein said transceiver communicates with said remote control unit, said remote control unit communicating with said transceiver and with said server over said digital connection between said content reproduction device and said server.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said digital connection comprises a wireless network.
3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said server transmits a listing of available programming by title to said remote control unit, and said remote control unit displays said listing of titles on a display device of said remote control unit.
4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein said remote control unit comprises:
a user input device with which said user can select a program from said listing and transmit a command for said server to output that selected programming to said content reproduction device.
5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein said listing of available programming comprises at least one on-line content resource.
6 . The system of claim 3 , wherein said listing of available programming comprises at least one streaming source.
7 . The system of claim 3 , wherein said listing of available programming comprises a play-list.
8 . The system of claim 4 , wherein said remote control unit allows a user to create a play-list by selecting a sequence of programs from said listing.
9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said signal from said server is compressed and said content reproduction device further is further configured to decompress said signal.
10 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:
a number of content reproduction devices; and a number of remote control units, wherein said remote control units control said server such that a plurality of different signals are output by said server to respective content reproduction devices.
11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said content reproduction device is incorporated in a video monitor.
12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein said server transmits a listing by title of available programming to said remote control unit.
13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein said remote control unit comprises:
a display device for displaying said listing; and a user input device with which said user can select a program from said list by title and transmit a command for said server to output that selected program to said video monitor.
14 . A method for managing programming, the method comprising:
making a digital connection between a content reproduction device and a server over which said server provides a signal to said content reproduction device; and controlling, with a remote control unit, output of said signal from said server to said content reproduction device; wherein said transceiver communicates with said remote control unit, said remote control unit communicating with said transceiver and with said server over said digital connection between said content reproduction device and said server.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein making said digital connection comprises transmitting said signal from said server to said content reproduction device via a wireless network.
16 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
transmitting a listing of available programming by title from said server to said remote control unit and displaying said listing by title on a display device of said remote control unit; wherein said digital connection carries all of said signal, user input from said remote control unit and said listing of available programming.
17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising:
receiving a selection of a program from said list with a user input device of said remote control unit; and transmitting a command for said server to output that selected program to said content reproduction device.
18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein said listing of available programming comprises at least one on-line content resource.
19 . The method of claim 16 , wherein said listing of available programming comprises at least one streaming source.
20 . The method of claim 16 , wherein said listing of available programming comprises a play-list.
21 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising allowing a user to create a play-list by selecting a sequence of programs from said listing.
22 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
outputting a plurality of different signals to a plurality of content reproduction device; and controlling said plurality of different signals with a plurality of remote control units and transceivers located with at least some of said content reproduction devices; wherein said different signals are addressed to corresponding ones of said content reproduction devices based on which of said plurality of remote control units requested one said signals through which of said content reproduction devices.
23 . The method of claim 14 , wherein said content reproduction device is incorporated in a video monitor.Cited by (0)
