Abstract

A system and method automatically learns mailbox configuration conventions. The validator module determines a valid set of configuration parameters used for accessing an electronic mailbox of a user within a mail domain after receiving configuration information from the user that is limited in the configuration parameters required for accessing the electronic mailbox. A learner module accepts from the validator module a set of configuration parameters determined to be valid and generates configuration conventions for a mail domain. A database store is the generated configuration conventions. The validator and learner modules can be operative as part of a web server.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 48 . (canceled)

         49 . A communication system comprising:
an email device; and an email interface configured to cooperate with said email device to
determine a set of valid configuration parameters to access an email box based upon an input of limited configuration information,
request an input of additional information and determine at least one subsequent set of potentially valid configuration parameters for reattempting access if an initial set of potentially valid configuration parameters fails, and
generate configuration conventions based upon the set of valid configuration parameters.

50 . The system according to claim 49 wherein said email interface is operative as a component object model acting as an agent between said email device and an email box.

51 . The system according to claim 49 wherein said email device comprises a mobile wireless device.

52 . The system according to claim 49 further comprising a web server on which said email interface is operative.

53 . The system according to claim 49 wherein said email interface further comprises a database configured to store the configuration conventions.

54 . The system according to claim 49 wherein said email interface is operative for applying tests to the configuration parameters to ensure that the configuration parameters are credible.

55 . The system according to claim 49 wherein said email interface is operative for applying rules from a rules database for indicating which configuration conventions are to be learned.

56 . The system according to claim 49 wherein the configuration conventions comprise configuration conventions applicable to a plurality of email domains.

57 . The system according to claim 49 wherein the configuration information comprises an email address and a password.

58 . The system according to claim 49 wherein the configuration information comprises an access protocol for the email box being accessed.

59 . The system according to claim 58 wherein the access protocol comprises a Post Office Protocol (POP) or an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).

         60 . A communications device comprising:
an email interface configured to cooperate with an email device to
determine a set of valid configuration parameters to access an email box based upon an input of limited configuration information,
request an input of additional information and determine at least one subsequent set of potentially valid configuration parameters for reattempting access if an initial set of potentially valid configuration parameters fails, and
generate configuration conventions based upon the set of valid configuration parameters.

61 . The communications device according to claim 60 wherein said email interface is operative as a component object model acting as an agent between said email device and an email box.

62 . The communications device according to claim 60 wherein said email interface is operative for applying tests to the configuration parameters to ensure that the configuration parameters are credible.

63 . The communications device according to claim 60 wherein said email interface is operative for applying rules from a rules database for indicating which configuration conventions are to be learned.

64 . The communications device according to claim 60 wherein the configuration conventions comprise configuration conventions applicable to a plurality of email domains.

65 . The communications device according to claim 60 wherein the configuration information comprises an email address and a password.

66 . The communications device according to claim 60 wherein the configuration information comprises an access protocol for the email box being accessed.

67 . A method for operating an email interface configured to cooperate with an email device comprising:
determining a set of valid configuration parameters to access an email box based upon an input of limited configuration information; requesting an input of additional information and determine at least one subsequent set of potentially valid configuration parameters for reattempting access if an initial set of potentially valid configuration parameters fails; and generating configuration conventions based upon the set of valid configuration parameters.

68 . The method according to claim 67 further comprising applying tests to the configuration parameters to ensure that the configuration parameters are credible.

69 . The method according to claim 67 further comprising applying rules from a rules database for indicating which configuration conventions are to be learned.

70 . The method according to claim 67 wherein the configuration conventions comprise configuration conventions applicable to a plurality of email domains.

71 . The method according to claim 67 wherein the configuration information comprises an email address and a password.

72 . The method according to claim 67 wherein the configuration information comprises an access protocol for the email box being accessed.
