Methods and apparatus for presenting multiple region displays

Abstract

Various embodiments of apparatus and/or methods are described for presenting advertisements in association with broadcast video content and non-broadcast content on a presentation device. The advertisements may be presented simultaneously with the broadcast video content and non-broadcast content or may be used as substitute content to replace interstitials within the broadcast video content.

1 . A television receiver comprising:
 a receiver module that receives broadcast video content from a programming source on a first broadcast channel and that receives an advertisement from the programming source on a second broadcast channel;   an input configured to receive non-broadcast content from an external device located in a non-residential location of the television receiver; and   a processor communicatively coupled to the receiver module and the input configured to simultaneously:
 output the broadcast video content for presentation on a presentation device in a first region of a display area; 
 output the advertisement for presentation in a second region of the display area; and 
 output the non-broadcast content for presentation in a third region of the display area. 
   
     
     
         2 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to output the first and second regions of the display area in a split screen format. 
     
     
         3 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to output the second region in a picture-in-picture mode within the first region. 
     
     
         4 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , further comprising a display screen operable to present the display area to a user. 
     
     
         5 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver module comprises:
 a first tuner configured to receive the first channel; and   a second tuner configured to receive the second channel.   
     
     
         6 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the external device comprises a portable storage device and the input is configured to receive the portable storage device and transfer the non-broadcast content from the portable storage device. 
     
     
         7 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the second broadcast channel is selected based on at least one of goods or services offered at the non-residential location. 
     
     
         8 . The television receiver of  claim 7 , wherein the second broadcast channel is further selected based on a time of day. 
     
     
         9 . The television receiver of  claim 7 , wherein the second broadcast channel is further selected based on a subject matter of the broadcast video content. 
     
     
         10 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the processor outputs the non-broadcast content as scrolling text in the third region. 
     
     
         11 . The television receiver of  claim 1 , wherein the non-broadcast content includes information regarding at least one of goods and services offered at the non-residential location 
     
     
         12 . A method for presenting video content, the method comprising:
 receiving broadcast video content from a programming source on a first broadcast channel;   outputting the broadcast video content for presentation in a first region of a display area of a presentation device;   receiving an advertisement from the programming source on a second broadcast channel;   outputting the advertisement for presentation on the presentation device in a second region of the display area simultaneously within the broadcast video content;   receiving non-broadcast content from an external computing device; and   outputting the non-broadcast content for presentation on the presentation device in a third region of the display area simultaneously within the broadcast video content and the advertisement.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , further comprising:
 selecting the second channel based on characteristics of a non-residential location of the presentation device.   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the non-broadcast content includes information regarding at least one of goods and services offered at the non-residential location. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein outputting the non-broadcast content comprises outputting the non-broadcast content as scrolling text. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 12 , further comprising:
 detecting an interstitial within the broadcast video content; and   adjusting a size of the advertisement, to present the advertisement in both the first region and the second region of the display area, during at least a portion of the duration of the interstitial.   
     
     
         17 . A television receiver comprising:
 a receiver module that receives broadcast video content and an advertisement from a programming source, the advertisement selected based on at least one of goods or services offered at a non-residential location of the television receiver;   an input configured to receive non-broadcast content from an external computing device located at the non-residential location; and   a processor communicatively coupled to the receiver module and the input configured to simultaneously:
 output the broadcast video content for presentation on a presentation device in a first region of a display area; 
 output the broadcast video content for presentation on the presentation device in a second region of the display area; and 
 output the non-broadcast content for presentation on the presentation device in a third region of the display area. 
   
     
     
         18 . The television receiver of  claim 17 , wherein the receiver module receives the advertisement prior to reception of the broadcast video content, the television receiver further comprising a storage medium configured to store the advertisement for subsequent presentation. 
     
     
         19 . The television receiver of  claim 17 , wherein the receiver module receives the broadcast video content on a first channel of the programming source and receives the advertisement on a second channel of the programming source. 
     
     
         20 . The television receiver of  claim 17 , wherein the external computing device comprises a portable storage device and the input is configured to receive the portable storage device and transfer the non-broadcast content from the portable storage device.
