Abstract

An automated banking machine controlled responsive to data bearing records includes a card reader that can read identifying data from user cards. User operation of the automated banking machine is authorized responsive to the identifying data read by the card reader. The automated banking machine is allowed temporary usage of a machine application that enables the machine to perform an authorized banking transaction requiring operation of the card reader.

1 . A method involving an automated transaction machine that is operable responsive at least in part to data read from data bearing records, comprising:
 (a) operating the automated transaction machine to read user data provided by a user of the machine,
 wherein the machine includes at least one reader operable to read user data,
 wherein the at least one reader includes at least one of a card reader and a biometric reader, 
 
 wherein the machine is operable to cause a financial account to be identified responsive at least in part to computer-determined correspondence between user data read by the at least one reader and the financial account, 
 wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser,
 wherein the cash dispenser is operable to selectively dispense cash stored in the machine to authorized users of the machine, 
 
 wherein the machine includes a user interface,
 wherein the user interface includes at least one user display,
 wherein each user display includes a display screen, 
 
 
 wherein the machine is operable during a requested cash dispense transaction on a financial account to
 cause user data read by the at least one reader to be sent to a remote financial transaction host, 
 carry out the requested transaction responsive at least in part to the user being recognized as an authorized user of the machine based at least in part on computer-determined correspondence between
 user data read by the at least one reader, and 
 authorized user identification data stored in an authorized user information data store, 
 
 dispense cash through operation of the cash dispenser responsive at least in part to the machine user being recognized as an authorized user, and 
 
 wherein the machine is operable to cause the financial account involved in the requested transaction to be assessed a value associated with the cash dispensed, 
 wherein the machine includes at least one input device, wherein the at least one input device includes the at least one reader, 
 wherein the financial account is associated with a customer profile,
 wherein the customer profile includes a customer type,
 wherein a customer type differentiates between classes of customers with regard to transaction options available to a customer, 
  wherein when a customer type corresponds to a first class of customer, the available transaction options include each of: 
  an option to request a bill pay transaction, 
  an option to request a last cash withdrawal amount, 
  wherein the last cash withdrawal amount corresponds to an amount of cash most recently withdrawn on the financial account in a transaction involving the remote financial transaction host, 
  an option to request a different cash withdrawal amount, 
  wherein the different cash withdrawal amount corresponds to an amount of cash differing from the last cash withdrawal amount, 
  wherein when a customer type corresponds to a second class of customer, the available transaction options do not include at least the option to perform a bill pay transaction; 
 
 
   (b) operating the machine to display the transaction options that are available to the user based on the customer profile including the first class of customer;   (c) operating the machine to receive user selection of a transaction option associated with either
 the option to request the last cash withdrawal amount,
 wherein received user selection of the option to request the last cash withdrawal amount causes the machine to dispense an amount of cash corresponding the last cash withdrawal amount, 
 
 or 
 the option to request the different cash withdrawal amount,
 wherein received user selection of the option to request the different cash withdrawal amount causes both
 the machine to dispense an amount of cash associated with the different cash withdrawal amount, 
 and 
 the last cash withdrawal amount associated with the customer profile to be changed to the amount of cash dispensed; and 
 
 
   (d) operating the machine to dispense an amount of cash corresponding to the user selection received in (c).   
     
     
         2 . The method according to  claim 1  wherein the machine is part of a banking system,
 wherein the machine includes at least one machine computer, 
 wherein the at least one reader includes both
 a card reader, and 
 a biometric reader, 
 
 wherein the at least one machine computer is operative during a user transaction session to
 cause card data to be read through operation of the card reader, and 
 cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader, 
 
 wherein (a) includes
 (ai) operating the card reader to read user card data; and 
 (aii) operating the biometric reader to read user biometric data; 
 
 and further comprising:
 (e) prior to (d), operating the at least one computer to authorize the user to request a financial transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to both
 computer-determined correspondence between the user card data read in (ai) and stored card information, and 
 computer-determined correspondence between the user biometric data read in (aii) and stored biometric information. 
 
 
 
     
     
         3 . A method comprising:
 (a) operating at least one reader of an automated transaction machine to read user data provided by a user of the machine, wherein the user data is usable to identify a financial account associated with customer identification data,
 wherein the machine is operable to cause a financial transfer involving the financial account responsive at least in part to computer-determined correspondence between user data read by the at least one reader and the financial account, 
 wherein the machine includes at least one input device, a cash dispenser, and at least one display,
 wherein the at least one input device includes the at least one reader, 
 wherein the cash dispenser is operative to dispense cash to computer-determined authorized users of the machine, 
 wherein the at least one display includes at least one display screen, 
 
 wherein the customer identification data corresponds to a plurality of customer profile values,
 wherein the customer profile values include a last withdrawal amount value,
 wherein the last withdrawal amount value is representative of an amount of cash most recently withdrawn using the financial account in a transaction involving a host associated with the machine; 
 
 
   (b) operating the at least one display to output a plurality of selectable options for performing a transaction with the machine,
 wherein a first selectable option of the selectable options corresponds to a dispensing of a first amount of cash having a value equal to the last withdrawal amount value, 
 wherein a second selectable option of the selectable options is associated with a dispensing of a different amount of cash having a value different from the last withdrawal amount value, 
 wherein at least one of the selectable options is output responsive at least in part to at least one of the customer profile values; 
   (c) operating the at least one input device to receive user selection corresponding to either the first selectable option or the second selectable option,
 wherein received user selection of the first selectable option causes the cash dispenser to dispense the first amount of cash, 
 wherein received user selection of the second selectable option causes the cash dispenser to dispense the different amount of cash; 
   (d) operating the cash dispenser to dispense an amount of cash corresponding to the user selection received in (c); and   (e) operating the machine to cause the last withdrawal amount value included in the customer profile values to be updated to reflect a value that corresponds to the amount of cash dispensed in (d).   
     
     
         4 . The method according to  claim 3   wherein the at least one reader comprises at least one of a card reader and a biometric reader,
 wherein (a) includes operating the at least one of a card reader and a biometric reader to read the user data. 
   
     
     
         5 . The method according to  claim 3   wherein in (a) the customer profile values include a customer type value,
 wherein a customer type value differentiates between classes of customers with regard to user selectable transaction options available with the machine,
 wherein (b) includes operating the at least one display to output selectable transactions available to the user based on the customer type value in (a). 
 
   
     
     
         6 . The method according to  claim 5   wherein when a customer type value corresponds to a first class of customer, the plurality of selectable options for performing a transaction with the machine include a user selectable option to perform a bill pay transaction,   wherein when a customer type value corresponds to a second class of customer, the plurality of selectable options for performing a transaction with the machine does not include the user selectable option to perform a bill pay transaction,   wherein in (a) the customer type value corresponds to the first class of customer,
 wherein (b) includes displaying the user selectable option to perform a bill pay transaction. 
   
     
     
         7 . The method according to  claim 3  and further comprising
 (f) receiving with the machine, information based on the customer identification data received in (a); 
 (g) operating the machine to generate a customized advertisement based on the information received in (f); 
 (h) operating the machine to present the customized advertisement to the user. 
 
     
     
         8 . The method according to  claim 7  and further comprising
 (i) updating information included in the customer profile values to reflect that the customized advertisement was presented to the user. 
 
     
     
         9 . The method according to  claim 3  wherein the machine includes a browser, wherein (b) includes displaying a page in the browser. 
     
     
         10 . The method according to  claim 3  and further comprising
 (f) operating the at least one user display to output a targeted advertisement to the user, wherein the targeted advertisement is based on the user selection received in (c). 
 
     
     
         11 . The method according to  claim 3  and further comprising
 (f) operating the at least one user display to output a targeted advertisement to the user, wherein the targeted advertisement is based on a particular transaction device of the machine which is required to be used in carrying out the user selection received in (c). 
 
     
     
         12 . A method comprising:
 (a) operating an automated transaction machine to receive at least one customer identification value,
 wherein the at least one customer identification value corresponds to a customer profile in a data store,
 wherein the customer profile includes a customer type value,
 wherein a customer type value differentiates between classes of customers with regard to operations available with the automated transaction machine; 
 
 
   (b) operating the automated transaction machine to cause a page to be displayed in a browser of the automated transaction machine, wherein the page is loaded responsive at least in part to the customer type value,
 wherein the page includes a plurality of user selectable transaction options for performing transactions available with the automated transaction machine; 
   (c) operating the automated transaction machine to receive at least one user input that corresponds to one of the user selectable transaction options displayed in (b); and   (d) updating the customer profile responsive at least in part to the at least one input received in (c).   
     
     
         13 . The method according to  claim 12  wherein the machine includes at least one reader,
 wherein the at least one reader comprises at least one of a card reader and a biometric reader,
 wherein (a) includes operating the at least one of a card reader and a biometric reader to read the at least one customer identification value. 
 
 
     
     
         14 . The method according to  claim 12   wherein (a) includes operating at least one reader of the machine to read user data usable to determine a financial account,   wherein the customer profile includes a last withdrawal amount value,
 wherein the last withdrawal amount value is representative of an amount of cash most recently withdrawn using the financial account in a transaction involving a host associated with the machine, 
   wherein the page displayed in (b) includes a first user selectable transaction option that corresponds to a dispensing of a first amount of cash having a value equal to the last withdrawal amount value, and   wherein the page displayed in (b) includes a second user selectable transaction option associated with a dispensing of a different amount of cash having a value different from the last withdrawal amount value,   wherein (c) includes receiving user selection corresponding to either
 the first user selectable transaction option, or 
 the second user selectable transaction option, 
   and further comprising:
 (e) operating a cash dispenser of the machine to dispense an amount of cash corresponding to the user selection received in (c); and 
 (f) updating the last withdrawal amount value included in the customer profile to reflect a value that corresponds to the amount of cash dispensed in (e). 
   
     
     
         15 . The method according to  claim 12   wherein (c) includes operating the machine to receive from a machine user, user input that corresponds to selection of a particular transaction,   wherein (d) includes updating the customer profile in the data store to reflect the particular transaction selected in (c).   
     
     
         16 . The method according to  claim 15   wherein the page displayed in (b) includes a first user selectable transaction option that corresponds to the particular transaction,
 wherein the particular transaction comprises a cash withdrawal transaction,
 wherein (c) includes operating the machine to receive user input that corresponds to selection of the cash withdrawal transaction, 
 
   and further comprising:
 (e) operating a cash dispenser of the machine to dispense an amount of cash associated with the selection received in (c). 
   
     
     
         17 . The method according to  claim 12   wherein when a customer type value corresponds to a first class of customer, the plurality of user selectable transaction options displayed in a page includes a user selectable transaction option to perform a bill pay transaction,   wherein when a customer type value corresponds to a second class of customer, the plurality of user selectable transaction options displayed in a page does not include the user selectable transaction option to perform a bill pay transaction,   wherein in (a) the customer profile includes a customer type value that corresponds to the first class of customer,
 wherein (b) includes displaying a page that includes the user selectable transaction option to perform a bill pay transaction, responsive at least in part to (a). 
   
     
     
         18 . The method according to  claim 12  and further comprising
 (e) determining from the customer profile that a machine user is not associated with a particular financial institution; 
 (f) responsive at least in part to the determination in (e), operating the automated transaction machine to display an advertisement that includes a promotion for the particular financial institution. 
 
     
     
         19 . The method according to  claim 18  and further comprising
 (g) prior to (f), determining from the customer profile that the machine user did not previously receive the advertisement, 
 (h) subsequent to (f), updating the customer profile in the data store to reflect that the machine user received the advertisement. 
 
     
     
         20 . The method according to  claim 12  and further comprising
 (e) generating a customized advertisement based on the customer profile; 
 (f) operating the machine to present the customized advertisement.
