Progressive set of golf club heads

Abstract

A set of progressive golf clubs with an elliptical pad construction on the back of the striking face that corresponds to a location, shape and size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern for the lofts and lengths of each of the golf clubs in the set. The elliptical pad progressively changes in location, shape and size from the long irons, to the mid irons, to the short irons, and to the wedges, based on the location, shape and size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern for each of the long irons, mid irons, short irons, and wedges.

1 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head.   
     
     
         2 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first swing pad, said first swing pad having a first axis, second axis and first thickness;   wherein the first swing pad has a first location and the first axis, second axis and first location of the first swing pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second swing pad, said second swing pad having a first axis, second axis and second thickness;   wherein the second swing pad has a second location and the first axis, second axis and second location of the second swing pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head.   
     
     
         3 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 ,
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 5 iron and 9 iron golf club heads.   
     
     
         4 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 ,
 wherein the difference between the first major axis and first minor axis, is greater than, the difference between the second major axis and second minor axis.   
     
     
         5 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 4 ,
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 4 iron and 8 iron golf club heads.   
     
     
         6 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 4 ,
 wherein the first golf club head has a loft that is lower than the loft of the second golf club head.   
     
     
         7 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 4 ,
 wherein the first golf club head has a club length that is longer than the club length of the second golf club head.   
     
     
         8 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 ,
 wherein the second elliptical pad is shaped more like a circle than the first elliptical pad.   
     
     
         9 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 ,
 wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head defines an area of the back of the striking face of the first golf club head;   wherein the first major axis and first minor axis define an area of the first elliptical pad;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head defines an area of the back of the striking face of the second golf club head;   wherein the second major axis and second minor axis define an area of the second elliptical pad;   wherein a first ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face of the first golf club head in proportion to the area of the first elliptical pad;   wherein a second ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face of the second golf club head in proportion to the area of the second elliptical pad;   wherein the first ratio is greater than the second ratio.   
     
     
         10 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 ,
 wherein the first major axis and first minor axis define an area of the first elliptical pad;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head except the area of the first elliptical pad defines an area of the back of the striking face except the area of the first elliptical pad of the first golf club head;   wherein the second major axis and second minor axis define an area of the second elliptical pad;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head except the area of the second elliptical pad defines an area of the back of the striking face except the area of the second elliptical pad of the second golf club head;   wherein a first ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face except the area of the first elliptical pad of the first golf club head in proportion to the area of the first elliptical pad;   wherein a second ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face except the area of the second elliptical pad of the second golf club head in proportion to the area of the second elliptical pad;   wherein the first ratio is greater than the second ratio.   
     
     
         11 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 9 ,
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 3 iron and 7 iron golf club heads.   
     
     
         12 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head.   
     
     
         13 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 12 ;
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 5 iron, 7 iron and 9 iron golf club heads.   
     
     
         14 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 1 , further comprising;
 a first insert having a location, shape and size corresponding to the first elliptical pad, said first insert positioned adjacent to the first elliptical pad;   a second insert having a location, shape and size corresponding to the second elliptical pad, said second insert positioned adjacent to the second elliptical pad;   
     
     
         15 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 14 , further comprising;
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 6 iron and pitching wedge golf club heads.   
     
     
         16 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 12 ,
 wherein the difference between the first major axis and first minor axis, is greater than, the difference between the second major axis and second minor axis; and,   wherein the difference between the second major axis and second minor axis, is greater than, the difference between the third major axis and third minor axis.   
     
     
         17 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 12 ,
 wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head defines an area of the back of the striking face of the first golf club head;   wherein the first major axis and first minor axis define an area of the first elliptical pad;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head defines an area of the back of the striking face of the second golf club head;   wherein the second major axis and second minor axis define an area of the second elliptical pad;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head defines an area of the back of the striking face of the third golf club head;   wherein the third major axis and third minor axis define an area of the third elliptical pad;   wherein a first ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face of the first golf club head in proportion to the area of the first elliptical pad;   wherein a second ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face of the second golf club head in proportion to the area of the second elliptical pad;   wherein a third ratio is defined as the area of the back of the striking face of the third golf club head in proportion to the area of the third elliptical pad;   wherein the first ratio is greater than the second ratio; and   wherein the second ratio is greater than the third ratio.   
     
     
         18 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first major axis that is larger than the second major axis of the second elliptical pad.   
     
     
         19 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 18 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second major axis that is larger than the third major axis of the third elliptical pad.   
     
     
         20 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 19 ;
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 6 iron, 8 iron and gap wedge golf club heads.   
     
     
         21 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first minor axis that is smaller than the second minor axis of the second elliptical pad.   
     
     
         22 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 21 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second minor axis that is smaller than the third minor axis of the third elliptical pad.   
     
     
         23 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 22 ;
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 7 iron, 9 iron and sand wedge golf club heads.   
     
     
         24 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first thickness that is smaller than the second thickness of the second elliptical pad.   
     
     
         25 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 24 ,
 wherein the striking face of said first golf club head has the same thickness as the thickness of the striking face of said second golf club head.   
     
     
         26 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 24 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second thickness that is smaller than the third thickness of the third elliptical pad.   
     
     
         27 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 26 ;
 wherein the progressive set of golf club heads includes 6 iron, 8 iron and pitching wedge golf club heads.   
     
     
         28 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 26 ,
 wherein the striking face of said first golf club head has the same thickness as the thickness of the striking face of said second golf club head, and the thickness of the striking face of said second golf club head has the same thickness as the thickness of the striking face of said third golf club head.   
     
     
         29 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first thickness that is the same as the second thickness of the second elliptical pad;   wherein the striking face of said first golf club head has a first thickness that is less than the second thickness of the striking face of said second golf club head.   
     
     
         30 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 29 ,
 wherein the first thickness of the first elliptical pad is 0.5 mm.   
     
     
         31 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 29 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second thickness that is the same as the third thickness of the third elliptical pad;   wherein the striking face of said second golf club head has a second thickness that is less than the third thickness of the striking face of said third golf club.   
     
     
         32 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first thickness, and the striking face of said first golf club head has a first thickness;   wherein a first thickness ratio is defined as the first thickness of the first elliptical pad over the first thickness of the striking face of said first golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second thickness, and the striking face of said second golf club head has a second thickness;   wherein a second thickness ratio is defined as the second thickness of the second elliptical pad in proportion to the second thickness of the striking face of said second golf club head;   wherein the first thickness ratio and second thickness ratio are the same.   
     
     
         33 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 32 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third thickness, and the striking face of said third golf club head has a third thickness;   wherein a third thickness ratio is defined as the third thickness of the third elliptical pad in proportion to the third thickness of the striking face of said third golf club head;   wherein the second thickness ratio and third thickness ratio are the same.   
     
     
         34 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location with a first vertical distance measured along the y-axis from the center of the first elliptical pad to the sole of the first golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location with a second vertical distance measured along the y-axis from the center of the second elliptical pad to the sole of the second golf club head;   wherein the first vertical distance of the first elliptical pad is greater than the second vertical distance of the second elliptical pad.   
     
     
         35 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 34 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location with a third vertical distance measured along the y-axis from the center of the third elliptical pad to the sole of the third golf club head;   wherein the second vertical distance of the second elliptical pad is greater than the third vertical distance of the third elliptical pad.   
     
     
         36 . A progressive set of golf club heads, comprising:
 a first golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said first golf club head comprises a first elliptical pad, said first elliptical pad having a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said first golf club head;   a second golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said second golf club head comprises a second elliptical pad, said second elliptical pad having a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said second golf club head;   wherein the horizontal centerline of a golf club head is defined as the midpoint of the top line and the sole of the club, as measured in the y-axis direction from the point where the sole contacts a playing surface during address by a golfer;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location with a first vertical distance measured along the y-axis from the center of the first elliptical pad to the horizontal center of the first golf club head;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location with a second vertical distance measured along the y-axis from the center of the second elliptical pad to the horizontal center of the second golf club head;   wherein the first vertical distance of the first elliptical pad is smaller than the second vertical distance of the second elliptical pad.   
     
     
         37 . The progressive set of golf club heads of  claim 36 , further comprising;
 a third golf club head, comprising a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face of said third golf club head comprises a third elliptical pad, said third elliptical pad having a third major axis, third minor axis and third thickness;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location and the third major axis, third minor axis and third location of the third elliptical pad correspond to a third location and third size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said third golf club head;   wherein the third elliptical pad has a third location with a third vertical distance measured along the y-axis from the center of the third elliptical pad to the horizontal center of the third golf club head;   wherein the second vertical distance of the second elliptical pad is smaller than the third vertical distance of the third elliptical pad.   
     
     
         38 . A golf club head, comprising:
 a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face comprises an elliptical pad, said elliptical pad having a major axis, minor axis and thickness;   wherein the elliptical pad has a location and the major axis, minor axis and location of the elliptical pad correspond to a location and size of a predetermined golfer's impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said golf club head.   
     
     
         39 . The golf club head of  claim 38 ,
 wherein the major axis is oriented from the heel to the toe of the golf club head; and,   wherein the minor axis is oriented from the top line to the sole of the golf club head.   
     
     
         40 . The golf club head of  claim 38 , further comprising:
 an insert having a location, shape and size corresponding to the elliptical pad, said insert positioned adjacent to the elliptical pad.   
     
     
         41 . The golf club head of  claim 40 ,
 wherein the insert is attached to the elliptical pad with an adhesive.   
     
     
         42 . The golf club head of  claim 38 ,
 wherein the back of the striking face further comprises an transition area of varying thickness, said transition area located around the perimeter of the elliptical pad;   wherein the thickness of the transition area varies between the thickness of the elliptical pad at the perimeter of the elliptical pad, to zero thickness at a predetermined distance away from the perimeter of the elliptical pad.   
     
     
         43 . The golf club head of  claim 38 ,
 wherein the striking face is formed of a first material; and,   the elliptical pad on the back of the striking face is formed of a second material.   
     
     
         44 . The golf club head of  claim 43 ,
 wherein the elliptical pad is welded to the back of the striking face.   
     
     
         45 . The golf club head of  claim 38 ,
 wherein the striking face is formed of a first material and second material;   the elliptical pad on the back of the striking face is formed of a second material; and   the portion of the striking face formed of the second material has a location, size and shape corresponding to the elliptical pad on the back of the striking face.   
     
     
         46 . The golf club head of  claim 45 ,
 wherein the elliptical pad on the back of the striking face and the portion of the striking face formed of the second material are a monolithic structure.   
     
     
         47 . The golf club head of  claim 38 ,
 wherein the thickness of the striking face is no greater than 3.1 mm.   
     
     
         48 . A golf club head, comprising:
 a body defining a striking face, a top line, a sole, a back of the striking face, a heel, and a toe;   wherein the back of the striking face comprises a plurality of elliptical pads;   wherein a first elliptical pad comprises a first major axis, first minor axis and first thickness;   wherein the first elliptical pad has a first location and the first major axis, first minor axis and first location of the first elliptical pad correspond to a first location and first size of a predetermined golfer's first impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said golf club head;   wherein a second elliptical pad comprises a second major axis, second minor axis and second thickness;   wherein the second elliptical pad has a second location and the second major axis, second minor axis and second location of the second elliptical pad correspond to a second location and second size of a predetermined golfer's second impact pattern based on a loft and club length of said golf club head.
