Abstract

A system and method for distribution of multimedia content over a computer communications network using a portable web widget, the web widget adapted for viral distribution and execution in a web browser on a client device, the client device having a processor and a memory and the web widget having at least an active operational mode and an inactive operational mode. The web widget includes a content retrieval component communicatively coupled to an application server over the computer communications network, a content retrieval component configured to retrieve a multimedia content file and associated metadata from a storage resource to the memory of the client device after the web widget enters the active operational mode, a content preview component configured by the client device processor to execute a portion of the retrieved multimedia content file, and a transaction processing component operative to initiate a commercial transaction pertaining to the multimedia content file.

 a content retrieval component communicatively coupled to an application server over the computer communications network, the content retrieval component configured to retrieve one or more multimedia display files and metadata from a storage resource to the memory of the client device after the web widget enters an active operational mode, the one or more multimedia display files and metadata associated with each of one or more multimedia content files, the one or more multimedia content files associated with the web widget upon creation of the web widget by at least one of a content owner and a content distributor using a multimedia content distribution system executing on the application server, the storage resource communicatively coupled to the application server, the web widget entering the active operational mode after a user clicks on the web widget in an inactive operational mode in the web browser;   a content preview component configured to enable the multimedia content distribution system to perform a streamed execution of a portion of each of the one or more multimedia content files in the web browser on the client device based on a selection request made on the web widget in the active operational mode from the user for streamed execution of at least one of the one or more multimedia content files; and   a transaction processing component configured by the processor to execute and complete a commercial transaction pertaining to the one or more multimedia content files.

 a content search component communicatively coupled to an application server over the computer communications network, the content search component configured to search for one or more multimedia content files accessible from the application server after the web widget enters an active operational mode, the one or more multimedia content files associated with the web widget upon creation of the web widget by at least one of a content owner and a content distributor using a multimedia content distribution system executing on the application server, the web widget entering the active operational mode after a user clicks on the web widget in an inactive operational mode in the web browser;   a content retrieval component communicatively coupled to the application server over the computer communications network, the content retrieval component configured to retrieve one or more multimedia display files and metadata associated with each of the one or more multimedia content files from a storage resource to the memory of the client device, the storage resource communicatively coupled to the application server;   a content preview component configured to enable the multimedia content distribution system to perform a streamed execution of a portion of each of the one or more multimedia content files in the web browser on the client device based on a selection request from the user for streamed execution of at least one of the one or more multimedia content files; and   a transaction processing component configured to execute and complete a commercial transaction pertaining each of the one or more multimedia content files.

 activating a web widget configured to execute in a web browser on a client device, the client device having a processor and a memory, the web widget associated with one or more multimedia content files upon creation of the web widget by at least one of a content owner and a content distributor using a multimedia content distribution system executing on an application server, the multimedia content files stored in a storage resource communicatively coupled to the application server;   retrieving from the storage resource to the memory one or more multimedia display files and metadata for each of the one or more multimedia content files associated with the web widget;   receiving a selection request on the activated web widget, the selection request determined from one or more user selections of the retrieved one or more multimedia display files;   performing in the web browser a streamed execution of a portion of each of the one or more multimedia content files from the multimedia content distribution system based on the selection request; and   completing a commercial transaction from within the web widget pertaining to one or more of the multimedia content files associated with the web widget.

 generating a web widget for execution in a web browser, the web widget associated with one or more multimedia content files, each of the one or more multimedia content files having associated metadata, the multimedia content files associated with the generated web widget by at least one of a content owner and a content distributor using a multimedia content distribution system;   distributing the web widget over the computer communications network to one or more web browsers, each web browser executing on a client device having a processor and a memory, the web widget distributed from a web server in the multimedia content distribution system;   executing the web widget in the one or more web browsers after activation of the web widget in the one or more web browsers;   searching the multimedia content distribution system for the one or more multimedia content files and the associated metadata after receiving a selection request at the web server from the one or more web browsers executing the web widget;   delivering to the web widget one or more multimedia display files and the associated metadata based on the selection request, each of the one or more multimedia display files associated with each of the one or more multimedia content files; and   completing a commercial transaction from within the web widget pertaining to one or more of the multimedia content files associated with the web widget.

 program code configured to retrieve one or more multimedia display files and metadata from a storage resource communicatively coupled to an application server to a memory of the client device after the computer program product enters an active operational mode, the one or more multimedia display files and metadata associated with each of one or more multimedia content files, the one or more multimedia content files associated with the computer program product upon creation of the computer program product by at least one of a content owner and a content distributor using a multimedia content distribution system executing on the application server;   program code configured to enable the multimedia content distribution system to perform a streamed execution of a portion of each of the one or more multimedia content files in the web browser based on a selection request from the user made on the client device for streamed execution of at least one of the one or more multimedia content files; and   program code configured by a processor in the client device to execute and complete a commercial transaction pertaining to the one or more multimedia content files.
