Abstract

The present invention relates to polynucleotide and polypeptide molecules for Zcyto21, an interferon-like protein, which is most closely related to interferon-α at the amino acid sequence level. The present invention also includes antibodies to the Zcyto21 polypeptides, and methods of using the polynucleotides and polypeptides.

1 . A transgenic mouse that has been engineered to express a zcyto21 gene, wherein the zcyto21 gene encodes a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to amino acid residues 20-200 of SEQ ID NO:2. 
     
     
         2 . The transgenic mouse of  claim 1 , wherein the zcyto21 gene encodes a polypeptide comprising amino acid residues 20-200 of SEQ ID NO:2. 
     
     
         3 . The transgenic mouse of  claim 1 , wherein the zcyto21 gene encodes a polypeptide comprising amino acid residues 1-200 of SEQ ID NO:2. 
     
     
         4 . The transgenic mouse of  claim 1 , wherein the zcyto21 gene comprises nucleotide residues 58-603 of SEQ ID NO:1. 
     
     
         5 . The transgenic mouse of  claim 1 , wherein the zcyto21 gene comprises nucleotide residues 1-603 of SEQ ID NO:1. 
     
     
         6 . A knock-out mouse which exhibits a complete absence of zcyto21 gene function, wherein the zcyto21 gene encodes a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to amino acid residues 20-200 of SEQ ID NO:2. 
     
     
         7 . The knock-out mouse of  claim 6 , wherein the zcyto21 gene encodes a polypeptide comprising amino acid residues 20-200 of SEQ ID NO:2. 
     
     
         8 . The knock-out mouse of  claim 6 , wherein the zcyto21 gene encodes a polypeptide comprising amino acid residues 1-200 of SEQ ED NO:2. 
     
     
         9 . The knock-out mouse of  claim 6 , wherein the zcyto21 gene comprises nucleotide residues 58-603 of SEQ ID NO:1.
