Abstract
An inflation system includes a bladder incorporated into an article of outdoor gear or apparel. The bladder is incorporated into the article of outdoor gear and apparel so as to provide insulation to a user. The inflation system includes a gas canister that includes a reservoir of dry gas. A valve mechanism allows the dry gas to be used to selectively inflate and deflate the bladder to provide a desired amount of insulation.

1 . An inflation system for inflating an article of outdoor gear or apparel using a dry gas, comprising:
an article of outdoor gear or apparel that includes a gas inflatable bladder configured and positioned in the outdoor gear or apparel so as to provide insulation to a user in an outdoor environment when the bladder is at least partially inflated with a dry gas; a pressurized reservoir of a dry gas in fluid communication with the gas inflatable bladder; and an actuateable valve positioned between the pressurized reservoir and the gas inflatable bladder, the actuateable valve being capable of being selectively opened and closed to allow gas from the pressurized reservoir to flow into the gas inflatable bladder.
2 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the dry gas has less than about 4.0% by weight of water.
3 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the dry gas is selected from the group consisting of argon, krypton, xenon, sulfur hexafluoride and combinations thereof.
4 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the gas reservoir is provided by a hand-held, portable metal canister having a maximum diameter in a range from about 0.5 inch to about 6 inches.
5 . An inflation system as in claim 2 , wherein the dry gas is under a pressure of at least about 2000 psi in the gas reservoir.
6 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the bladder comprises a plurality of cells in fluid communication with one another, the plurality of cell each having a plurality of walls that define a volume of less than about 300 cm 3 .
7 . The inflation system of claim 1 , wherein the inflatable bladder has a maximum inflatable pressure less than 5 psi.
8 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the actuatable valve is configured to release dry gas from the inflatable bladder.
9 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , further comprising a release valve in fluid communication with the inflatable bladder that that can be actuated to release dry gas from the inflatable bladder.
10 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , further comprising a user operated switch operably coupled to the actuateable valve and the release valve, the user operated switch being configured to provide selectable, incremental inflation and deflation of the inflatable bladder.
11 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the user operated switch is selected from the group consisting of a two button switch, a slider, and a dial.
12 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , further comprising:
a bladder connector fixed to the article of outdoor gear and apparel, the bladder connector including a valve that is configured to be actuated by a filling system connector; a portable filling system including a filling system connector that is configured to releasably couple with the bladder connector to form a seal therewith and to actuate the bladder connector valve when connected thereto; wherein the filling system is in fluid communication with the bladder and the gas reservoir and the filling system includes the actuateable valve that selectively allows gas from the reservoir to flow into the bladder.
13 . An inflation system as in claim 1 , wherein the bladder connector couples to the filling system connector through a friction fit, a snap fit, and/or a magnetic fit.
14 . The inflation system of claim 1 , wherein the inflatable bladder is flexible and incorporated into a flexible portion of a wearable item.
15 . The coupling system of claim 9 , wherein the wearable item is chosen from the group of outdoor apparel consisting of coats, parkas, jackets, vests, pants, gloves, mittens, hats, liners, waders, and snow boots, work boots, ski boots, and snowboard boots.
16 . The coupling system of claim 1 , wherein the gas bladder is incorporated into an item of outdoor gear chosen from the group consisting of tents, sleeping bags, bivouac bags, and sleeping pads.
17 . An inflation system for inflating an article of outdoor gear or apparel with a dry gas, comprising:
an article of outdoor gear or apparel that includes a gas inflatable bladder configured and positioned in the outdoor gear or apparel so as to provide insulation to a user in an outdoor environment; filling means for inflating the gas inflatable bladder with a dry gas, the filling system means including a gas reservoir that can be selectively removed from the filling system and a valve configured to be selectively opened and closed to release dry gas from the gas reservoir.
18 . The inflation system of claim 17 , wherein the filling means includes at least one of a two-button switch, a slider switch, or a dial switch that allows a user to selectively inflate and deflate the bladder.
19 . The inflation system of claim 17 , wherein the article of outdoor gear or apparel includes a first connector and the filling means includes a second connector that couples to the first connector to provide fluid communication therebetween.
