Claims

Abstract

The present invention generally relates to rust-resistant tape formulations and/or structures. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a rust-resistant tape that comprises a polymer base material layer, an adhesive layer and a rust-resistant component. In one embodiment, the adhesive layer adhered to one side of the layer of polymer base material. In another embodiment, the rust-resistant component comprises at least one volatile, or vapor-phase, corrosion inhibitor (VCI) that is placed into the matrix of the polymer base material or the adhesive layer. In still another embodiment, the at least one volatile, or vapor-phase, corrosion inhibitor (VCI) component of the present invention is contained within a discrete layer. In one instance, a rust-resistant tape in accordance with the present invention can be directly applied to a metal surface to be protected.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A rust-resistant tape comprising:
 a polymer base layer having an upper surface and a lower surface;   an adhesive layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the upper surface of the adhesive layer is in contact with the lower surface of the polymer base layer, wherein the adhesive layer is formed from a rubber, elastomer, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, acrylic/epoxy mixture, silica gel, glue, or mixtures thereof; and   a rust-resistant component, wherein the rust-resistant component is formed from at least one volatile, or vapor phase, corrosion inhibitor, or at least one non-volatile corrosion inhibitor, or both, and is located within the polymer base layer.   
     
     
         2 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 1 , wherein the polymer base layer is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, or p-phenylphenol. 
     
     
         3 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 2 , wherein said adhesive layer is formed from a rubber, polyurethane, or a mixture thereof; and
 wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor comprises a Group I or Group II metal nitrite, a sodium molybdate, an ammonium dimolybdate, an amine molybdate, a benzotriazole, an amine benzoate, or an amine nitrate.   
     
     
         4 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 3 , wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor is sodium nitrite, sodium molybdate, ammonium dimolybdate, cycolhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine molybdate, 2-ehtylhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine nitrate, cyclohexylamine benzoate, ethylamine benzoate, or benzotriazole, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         5 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 3 , wherein said corrosion inhibitor is said non-volatile corrosion inhibitor. 
     
     
         6 . A rust-resistant tape comprising:
 a polymer base layer having an upper surface and a lower surface;   an adhesive layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the upper surface of the adhesive layer is in contact with the lower surface of the polymer base layer, wherein the adhesive layer is formed from a rubber, elastomer, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, acrylic/epoxy mixture, silica gel, glue, or mixtures thereof; and   a rust-resistant component, wherein the rust-resistant component is formed from at least one volatile, or vapor phase, or at least one non-volatile corrosion inhibitor, or both, corrosion inhibitor and is located within the adhesive layer.   
     
     
         7 . The, rust-resistant tape of  claim 6 , wherein the polymer base layer is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, or p-phenylphenol. 
     
     
         8 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 7 , wherein said adhesive layer is formed from rubber, polyurethane, or a mixture thereof; and
 wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor comprises a Group I or Group II metal nitrite, a sodium molybdate, an ammonium dimolybdate, an amine molybdate, a benzotriazole, an amine benzoate, or an amine nitrate.   
     
     
         9 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 8 , wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor is sodium nitrite, sodium molybdate; ammonium dimolybdate, cycolhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine molybdate, 2-ehtylhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine nitrate, cyclohexylamine benzoate, ethylamine benzoate, or benzotriazole, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         10 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 8 , wherein said corrosion inhibitor is said non-volatile corrosion inhibitor. 
     
     
         11 . A rust-resistant tape comprising:
 a polymer base layer having an upper surface and a lower surface;   a rust-resistant layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the upper surface of the rust resistant layer is in contact with the lower surface of the polymer base layer; and   an adhesive layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the upper surface of the adhesive layer is in contact with the lower surface of the rust-resistant layer, wherein the adhesive layer is formed from a rubber, elastomer, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, acrylic/epoxy mixture, silica gel, glue, or mixtures thereof,   wherein the rust-resistant component, or said base layer, or both, is formed from at least one volatile, or vapor phase, corrosion inhibitor, or at least one non-volatile corrosion inhibitor, or both.   
     
     
         12 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 11 , wherein the polymer base layer is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, or p-phenylphenol. 
     
     
         13 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 12 , wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor comprises a Group I or Group II metal nitrite, a sodium molybdate, an ammonium dimolybdate, an amine molybdate, a benzotriazole, an amine benzoate, or an amine nitrate. 
     
     
         14 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 13 , wherein said rust resistant layer is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, or p-phenylphenol. 
     
     
         15 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 12 , wherein the adhesive layer is formed from rubber, polyurethane, or a suitable mixture thereof, and wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor is sodium nitrite, sodium molybdate, ammonium dimolybdate, cycolhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine molybdate,  2 -ehtylhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine nitrate, cyclohexylamine benzoate, ethylamine benzoate, or benzotriazole, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         16 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 12 , wherein the one or more volatile, or vapor phase, corrosion inhibitors are contained within a carrier compound that acts as a tie layer between the polymer base layer and the adhesive layer. 
     
     
         17 . A rust-resistant tape comprising:
 a polymer base layer having an upper surface and a lower surface;   an adhesive layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the lower surface of the adhesive layer is in contact with the upper surface of the polymer base layer, wherein the adhesive layer is formed from a rubber, elastomer, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, acrylic/epoxy mixture, silica gel, glue, or mixtures thereof; and   a rust-resistant layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the lower surface of the rust-resistant layer is in contact with the upper surface of the adhesive layer,   wherein the rust-resistant layer or said base layer, or both, contain at least one volatile, or vapor phase, corrosion inhibitor, or at least one non-volatile corrosion inhibitor, or both.   
     
     
         18 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 17 , wherein said polymer base layer is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, or p-phenylphenol, and wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor comprises a Group I or Group II metal nitrite, a sodium molybdate, an ammonium dimolybdate, an amine molybdate, a benzotriazole, an amine benzoate, or an amine nitrate. 
     
     
         19 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 18 , wherein said volatile corrosion inhibitor is sodium nitrite, sodium molybdate, ammonium dimolybdate, cycolhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine molybdate,  2 -ehtylhexylamine molybdate, dicyclohexylamine nitrate, cyclohexylamine benzoate, ethylamine benzoate, or benzotriazole, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         20 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 17 , wherein the tape further includes a second adhesive layer formed on the upper surface of the rust-resistant layer, and wherein said rust resistant layer is formed from polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, p-phenylphenol, or cast polypropylene. 
     
     
         21 . A rust-resistant tape comprising:
 a polymer base layer having an upper surface and a lower surface;   a non-continuous adhesive layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the lower surface of the adhesive layer is in contact with the upper surface of the polymer base layer, wherein the adhesive layer is formed from a rubber, elastomer, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, acrylic/epoxy mixtures, silica gel, glue, or mixture thereof; and   a rust-resistant layer having an upper surface and a lower surface, where the lower surface of the rust-resistant layer is in contact with the upper surface of the polymer base layer,   wherein the rust-resistant layer or said base layer, or both, contain at least one volatile, or vapor phase, corrosion inhibitor and wherein the combination of the non-continuous adhesive layer and the rust-resistant layer form a single layer across the width of the polymer base layer.   
     
     
         22 . The rust-resistant tape of  claim 21 , wherein said polymer base layer is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, PET-aluminum film, nylon, or p-phenylphenol.
