Abstract

The present teachings provide emulsions using ionic liquids for separation of biomolecules and related methods, compositions, and devices.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A composition comprising:
 an emulsion, the emulsion comprising
emulsion droplets dispersed within an ionic liquid that forms a continuous phase, the emulsion droplets comprising (i) a solvent that is immiscible with the ionic liquid, and (ii) dissolved biomolecules that are in a charged state.

         2 - 4 . (canceled)

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein a voltage differential is present across the emulsion droplets.

         6 - 7 . (canceled)

8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the dissolved biomolecules are negatively charged.

9 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the solvent is aqueous.

10 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the aqueous solvent is a buffer.

11 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the solvent is a non-polar organic solvent.

12 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ionic liquid is hydrophilic.

13 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ionic liquid is hydrophobic.

14 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the dissolved biomolecules are concentrated towards one end in one or more droplets.

15 . The composition of claim 14 , wherein the dissolved biomolecules are concentrated at the interface between the droplets and the ionic liquid.

16 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the biomolecules are found in samples of bodily fluids.

17 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein different droplets within the continuous phase predominantly contain different kinds of biomolecules.

18 . The composition of claim 17 , comprising a first population of droplets predominantly containing a first kind of biomolecule from a second population of droplets predominantly containing a second different kind of biomolecule, where the first population is concentrated within a different portion of the continuous phase than the second portion.

19 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein different droplets within the continuous phase contain different concentrations of a biomolecule.

20 . The composition of claim 17 , wherein droplets containing a first concentration of a biomolecule are generally concentrated within a different portion of the continuous phase from droplets containing a different concentration of biomolecule.

21 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the biomolecules comprise nucleic acid.

22 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the biomolecules comprise protein.
