Claims

Abstract

A composite cable is provided with a primary strength member comprising wire lay synthetic fibers coaxially wound around a cable core and an outer jacket of wire lay steel wires coaxially wound over the primary strength member. The composite cable provides improved bend-over-sheave performance, and is configured to be suitable for used as a purchase cable in an aircraft arrestment system.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A cable comprising:
 a cable core;   a primary strength member comprising wire lay synthetic fibers coaxially wound around the core; and   a jacket comprising wire lay steel wires coaxially wound over the primary strength member.   
     
     
         2 . The cable of  claim 1 , wherein the synthetic fibers are comprised of aramid fibers, liquid crystal polymer fibers, high modulus polyethylene fibers, or a combination of one or more of aramid fibers, liquid crystal polymer fibers, and high modulus polyethylene fibers. 
     
     
         3 . The cable of  claim 1 , wherein the primary strength member comprises multiple layers of wire lay synthetic fibers, each layer separated by a low friction layer. 
     
     
         4 . The cable of  claim 3 , wherein each low friction layer is comprised of a fluorinated ethylene propylene. 
     
     
         5 . The cable of  claim 1 , wherein the jacket comprises a layer of wires of equal diameter. 
     
     
         6 . The cable of  claim 1 , wherein the jacket is comprised of wires of extra improved plow steel. 
     
     
         7 . The cable of  claim 1 , further comprising a low friction layer between the primary strength member and the jacket. 
     
     
         8 . The cable of  claim 1 , wherein the core is comprised of synthetic fibers in a wire lay or a parallel lay. 
     
     
         9 . The cable of  claim 1 , wherein the core is comprised of fibers of high-modulus polyethylene. 
     
     
         10 . The cable of  claim 1 , further comprising a secondary fail safe cable, wherein the primary strength member coaxially surrounds the secondary fail-safe cable; and
 a low friction layer is disposed between the secondary fail-safe cable and the primary strength member.   
     
     
         11 . The cable of  claim 1 , further comprising an aircraft arrestment system including a cross deck pendant and an arresting engine, the cable attached to the cross deck pendant. 
     
     
         12 . The cable of  claim 1 , further comprising an attachment fixture on each end of the cable, the attachment fixture configured to attach to a cross deck pendant of an aircraft arrestment system.
