Abstract

This invention relates to a method for treatment or prevention of metabolic syndrome and diseases or conditions resulting therefrom in an individual, wherein an effective amount of an amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is administered to said individual. In addition, the invention relates to a method for inhibiting an amine oxidase enzyme or for treatment or prevention of diseases or conditions benefiting from inhibition of an amine oxidase enzyme in an individual, wherein a vitamin B1, its derivative, its precursor or metabolite is administered to said individual. Finally, the invention relates to a food product comprising an amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor in combination with a foodstuff, a food additive comprising an amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor in combination with a liquid, solid or semisolid carrier.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
. A method for treatment or prevention of metabolic syndrome or a disease or condition resulting therefrom in an individual, said method comprising administering an effective amount of an amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor to said individual, wherein the disease or condition is a complication of a metabolic syndrome, said disease or condition being selected from the group consisting of (a) microalbuminuria, (b) impaired fibrinolysis and increased coagulability including elevated PAI-1, elevated fibrinogen and increased levels of von Willebrand factor, (c) signs of chronic inflammation, including elevated CRP, (d) endothelial dysfunction including impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation (e) fatty liver disease and (f) microangiopathy and wherein the amine oxidase enzyme is VAP-1.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said metabolic syndrome has caused in said individual a disease or condition selected from the group consisting of atherosclerosis, vascular retinopathies, retinopathy, glomerulosclerosis, nephropathy, nephrotic syndrome, polyneuropathy, mononeuropathies, autonomic neuropathy, glaucoma, grey cataract, foot ulcers, and joint problems.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of vitamin B1, its derivative 3-(2-aminobenzyl)-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-thiazolium chloride hydrochloride, and its precursor benfotiamine.

. The method according to claim 3 wherein amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is vitamin B1.

. The method according to claim 3 wherein the vitamin B1 precursor is benfotiamine.

. The method according to claim 3 wherein the vitamin B1 derivative is 3-(2-aminobenzyl)-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-thiazolium chloride hydrochloride.

. A food product comprising an amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor in combination with a foodstuff.

. The food product according to claim 7 wherein said food product is a functional food, a nutrient, a nutritional supplement, a pharmafood, a nutraceutical, a health food or a designer food.

. The food product according to claim 8 wherein the ingredients are suitable for intake by individuals suffering from or being at risk of metabolic syndrome.

. The food product according to claim 8 , wherein said food product is a functional food in the form of butter, margarine, biscuits, bread, cake, candy, confectionery, yogurt or an other fermented milk product, or cereal.

. The food product according to claim 8 , wherein the amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is vitamin B1, its derivative, precursor or metabolite.

. The food product according to claim 11 wherein the amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is benfotiamine.

. A food additive comprising an amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor in combination with a liquid, solid or semisolid carrier.

. The food additive according to claim 13 wherein said food additive is packed in a package suitable for use by i) food industry in the addition of the product to a foodstuff, or ii) the consumer when adding said additive to a meal or other foodstuff.

. The food additive according to claim 13 , wherein said additive is in the form of a unit dosage to be used as a dietary supplement.

. The food additive according to claim 13 , wherein the amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is vitamin B1, its derivative, precursor or metabolite.

. The food additive according to claim 13 , wherein the amine oxidase enzyme inhibitor is benfotiamine.
