Abstract

A first data item is split into one or more parts. A corresponding name is determined for each of the one or more parts, each part name being determined using a message digest function or hash function of all of the data in the corresponding part. A second file is created to include the part names of the one or more parts of the first data item. Each of the one or more parts is caused to be distributed to at least one location in a computer network. In response to a request for the first data item, the second file is provided. The name of the second file may be published as a name for the first data item. The network may be a peer-to-peer network.

Claims

1 . A computer-implemented method implemented at least in part by hardware in combination with software, the method comprising:
splitting a first data item into one or more parts; for each of the one or more parts of the first data item, determining a corresponding part name, each part name being determined using a message digest or hash function of all of the data in the corresponding part of the first data item; creating a second file, said second file comprising the part names of the one or more parts of the first data item; and causing each of the one or more parts to be distributed to at least one location in a computer network.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the network is a peer-to-peer network and wherein each of the one or more parts is distributed to multiple locations in the network.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the message digest function comprises an SHA function.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

publishing the name of the second file as a name for the first data item.

7 . The method of claim 4 wherein the name for the second file is determined based, at least in part, on the part names of the one or more parts of the first data item.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the second file contains only the part names of the one or more parts.

split a first data item into one or more parts; for each of the one or more parts of the first data item, determine a corresponding part name, each part name being determined using a message digest function or hash function of all of the data in the corresponding part of the first data item; cause each of the one or more parts to be distributed to at least one location in a computer network; and create a second file, said second file comprising the part names of the one or more parts of the first data item.

13 . Computer-readable media as in claim 12 , the program further comprising code to:
in response to a request for the first data item, provide the second file.

15 . Computer-readable media as in claim 12 , the program further comprising code to:
determine a name for the second file; and associate the name of the second file with the first data item.

16 . Computer-readable media as in claim 13 wherein the request for the first data item comprises a name for the second file.

17 . Computer-readable media as in claim 12 , wherein the network is a peer-to-peer network and wherein each of the one or more parts is distributed to multiple locations in the computer network.

         18 .
