Abstract
Systems and methods for treating inflammatory and proliferative diseases, and wounds, using as a pharmacon a fatty acid metabolism inhibitor, a glycolytic inhibitor, and/or an agent able to alter cellular production of reactive oxygen, or combination thereof, optionally in combination with one or more chemotherapeutic agents. In preferred embodiments, the invention combines an oxirane carboxylic acid, represented by etomoxir, with a 2-deoxyglucose compound, represented by 2-deoxy-D-glucose, and/or an antibody against UCP and/or Fas antigen. The systems and methods of the invention can be used to treat drug-resistant or multi-drug resistant cancers.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method for treating cancer, comprising administering to a subject having cancer a therapeutically acceptable amount of a fatty acid metabolism inhibitor.
2 . The method of claim 1 wherein fatty acid metabolism inhibitor is able to inhibit beta-oxidation in the cell, bind to a reductase such as 2,4-dienoyl-CoA reductase, bind to a fatty acid isomerase such as 2,4-dienoyl-CoA isomerase, bind to a fatty acid transporter such as a mitochondrial fatty acid transporter, inhibit breakdown of butyryl CoA, inhibit breakdown of glytrayl CoA, inhibit breakdown of isovaleryl CoA, or inhibit butyryl dehydrogenase.
3 - 18 . (canceled)
19 . The method of claim 1 wherein the fatty acid metabolism inhibitor comprises a carboxylic acid.
20 - 24 . (canceled)
25 . The method of claim 1 wherein the fatty acid metabolism inhibitor has a structure:
wherein each of R 1 and R 2 independently comprises an organic moiety.
26 - 41 . (canceled)
42 . The method of claim 1 wherein the fatty acid metabolism inhibitor has a structure:
wherein each of R 10 , R 11 , R 12 , R 13 , R 14 , R 15 and R 16 independently comprises hydrogen or an organic moiety.
43 - 59 . (canceled)
60 . The method of claim 1 wherein the fatty acid metabolism inhibitor includes at least one of cerulenin, 5-(tetradecyloxy)-2-furoic acid, oxfenicine, methyl palmoxirate, metoprolol, amiodarone, perhexyline, aminocarnitine, hydrazonopropionic acid, 4-bromocrotonic acid, trimetazidine, ranolazine, hypoglycin, dichloroacetate, methylene cyclopropyl acetic acid, or beta-hydroxy butyrate or a non-hydrolyzable analog of carnitine.
61 . The method of claim 1 further comprising administering a glycolytic inhibitor.
62 - 68 . (canceled)
69 . The method of claim 1 wherein the cancer is multi-drug resistant.
70 . (canceled)
71 . The method of claim 1 wherein the subject is not indicated for treatment of cardiac insufficiency.
72 . The method of claim 1 wherein the cells comprising the cancer derive a majority of their metabolic energy through fatty acid metabolism.
73 - 86 . (canceled)
87 . The method of claim 1 further comprising administering to the subject a form of cancer treatment.
88 - 89 . (canceled)
90 . A composition, comprising:
a therapeutically acceptable combination of at least two of a fatty acid metabolism inhibitor, a glycolytic inhibitor, and/or an agent able to alter cellular production of reactive oxygen.
91 - 162 . (canceled)
163 . A method, comprising:
administering, to a subject susceptible to or having cancer, a therapeutically acceptable amount of the composition of claim 90 .
164 - 166 . (canceled)
167 . The method of claim 163 wherein the subject is not indicated for treatment for obesity.
168 . (canceled)
169 . A method, comprising:
surgically removing a tumor from a subject; and inserting, into a site within the subject where the tumor was removed therefrom, the composition of claim 90 .
170 - 179 . (canceled)
180 . A method, comprising:
administering, to a subject susceptible to or exhibiting symptoms of drug-resistant cancer, a therapeutically acceptable amount of a composition of claim 90 wherein the subject is not otherwise indicated for treatment with the compound.
181 . (canceled)
182 . A method, comprising:
administering, to a wound in a subject, a therapeutically acceptable amount of a composition comprising an agent able to alter production of reactive oxygen in cells located within or proximate the wound.
183 . The method of claim 182 in which the agent is a composition of claim 90 .
184 - 199 . (canceled)
200 . A composition, comprising:
a composition of claim 90 ; and a tumor cell vaccine.
