Abstract

Techniques are provided for displaying a map for a route in a ground-based vehicle. The map includes a variable road network map showing finer detail for geographic features near the route and less detail for geographic features farther from the route. The map is displayed based on the travel direction of the ground-based vehicle.

         57 . A computer-implemented method for presenting a route for a ground-based vehicle, comprising:
 determining, using at least one processor, a route region for a context map that includes an origin location and destination location of a route for a ground-based vehicle; identifying a group of one or more maneuvers that occur along the route and within a predetermined distance of one another for inclusion in a detailed map; generating an indication on the context map that corresponds to the detailed map; generating the detailed map on which is indicated the group of one or more maneuvers; determining, using the at least one processor, the type of route the one or more maneuvers occur on; identifying, based on the type of route, a group of one or more points of interest to display along the one or more maneuvers; and generating an indication on the detailed map that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         58 . The method of claim 57 , wherein the type of route includes a state road.

         59 . The method of claim 58 , wherein the points of interest include at least one of a scenic vista, a historic landmark, and a park.

         60 . The method of claim 57 , wherein the type of route includes an interstate.

         61 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the points of interest include at least one of gas, food, and lodging.

         62 . The method of claim 57 , further comprising:
 determining a length of the route the one or more maneuvers occur on; and generating an indication on the detailed map, based on the length of the route, that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         63 . The method of claim 57 , further comprising:
 receiving a length of time for the route; identifying, based on the length of time, a group of one or more points of interest to display along the one or more maneuvers; and generating, based on the length of time, an indication on the detailed map that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         64 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a computer program configured to present a route for a ground-based vehicle, the medium comprising one or more code segments that are executable by at least one processor to cause the at least one processor to:
 determine a route region for a context map that includes an origin location and destination location of a route for a ground-based vehicle; identify a group of one or more maneuvers that occur along the route and within a predetermined distance of one another for inclusion in a detailed map; generate an indication on the context map that corresponds to the detailed map; generate the detailed map on which is indicated the group of one or more maneuvers; determine the type of route the one or more maneuvers occur on; identify, based on the type of route, a group of one or more points of interest to display along the one or more maneuvers; and generate an indication on the detailed map that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         65 . The medium of claim 64 , wherein the type of route includes a state road.

         66 . The medium of claim 65 , wherein the points of interest include at least one of a scenic vista, a historic landmark, and a park.

         67 . The medium of claim 64 , wherein the type of route includes an interstate.

         68 . The medium of claim 67 , wherein the points of interest include at least one of gas, food, and lodging.

         69 . The method of claim 64 , further comprising one or more code segments executable by the at least one processor to cause the at least one processor to:
 determining a length of the route the one or more maneuvers occur on; and generating an indication on the detailed map, based on the length of the route, that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         70 . The medium of claim 64 , further comprising one or more code segments executable by the at least one processor to cause the at least one processor to:
 receiving a length of time for the route; identifying, based on the length of time, a group of one or more points of interest to display along the one or more maneuvers; and generating, based on the length of time, an indication on the detailed map that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         71 . A system for presenting a route for a ground-based vehicle, the system comprising:
 a storage device that stores one or more code segments; and at least one processor that executes the one or more code segments to perform the following steps:
 determining a route region for a context map that includes an origin location and destination location of a route for a ground-based vehicle;
 identifying a group of one or more maneuvers that occur along the route and within a predetermined distance of one another for inclusion in a detailed map;
 generating an indication on the context map that corresponds to the detailed map;
 generating the detailed map on which is indicated the group of one or more maneuvers;
 determining the type of route the one or more maneuvers occur on;
 identifying, based on the type of route, a group of one or more points of interest to display along the one or more maneuvers; and
 generating an indication on the detailed map that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         72 . The system of claim 71 , wherein the type of route includes a state road.

         73 . The system of claim 72 , wherein the points of interest include at least one of a scenic vista, a historic landmark, and a park.

         74 . The system of claim 71 , wherein the type of route includes an interstate.

         75 . The system of claim 74 , wherein the points of interest include at least one of gas, food, and lodging.

         76 . The system of claim 71 , wherein the at least one processor further executes the one or more code segments to perform the following steps:
 determining a length of the route the one or more maneuvers occur on; and generating an indication on the detailed map, based on the length of the route, that corresponds to the group of one or more points of interest.

         77 . The system of claim 71 , wherein the at least one processor further executes the one or more code segments to perform the following steps:
