Abstract

A method and apparatus of optimizing transitioning between EVDO and CDMA 1X systems in a hybrid access terminal, the method having the steps of: preventing a reconnect data call from being sent from the hybrid access terminal. The preventing step including checking whether a transition between an EVDO and a CDMA 1X system is successful; and if not blocking the data call, and/or checking whether an EVDO received signal strength indication is greater than or equal to a receiver sensitivity on the hybrid access terminal; and if yes, allowing the hybrid access terminal to connect to the EVDO system, and/or delaying a connection timer for connecting to the EVDO system and/or applying fast dormancy to the hybrid access terminal in an EVDO state.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method in a hybrid access terminal, said method comprising:
when the hybrid access terminal is on a first data-type network, attempting to access a second data-type network; and avoiding a reattempt to access the second data-type network until a time period expires.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising acquiring the second data-type network.

3 . The method of claim 2 wherein said acquiring commences while the hybrid access terminal is on the first data-type network.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising setting an avoid timer if access responsive to said attempting to access is unsuccessful.

5 . The method of claim 4 wherein said setting the avoid timer comprises setting the time period to be a function of prior unsuccessful attempts to access the second data-type network.

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising counting unsuccessful attempts to access the second data-type network.

7 . The method of claim 6 wherein the time period is proportional to a count of the unsuccessful attempts obtained during said counting.

8 . The method of claim 1 further comprising reattempting to access the second data-type network after expiration of the time period.

9 . The method of claim 1 further comprising determining, prior to expiration of the time period, whether an alternative network, alternative to the second data-type network, is available.

10 . The method of claim 9 further comprising attempting to access the alternative network.

11 . An apparatus for a hybrid access terminal, said apparatus comprising:
 a processor to:
attempt to access the second data-type network when the hybrid access terminal is on a first data-type network; and
avoid a reattempt to access the second data-type network until a time period expires.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said processor is further configured to acquire the second data-type network.

13 . The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said processor is configured to acquire the second-type data network while the hybrid access terminal is on the first data-type network.

14 . The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said processor is further configured to set an avoid time if access to the second data-type network is unsuccessful.

15 . The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the time period is a function of prior unsuccessful attempts to access the second data-type network.

16 . The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said processor is further configured to count unsuccessful attempts to access the second data-type network.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the time period is proportional to a count of the unsuccessful attempts.

18 . The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said processor is further configured to reattempt to access the second data-type network after expiration of the time period.

19 . The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said processor is further configured to determine, prior to expiration of the time period, whether an alternative network, alternative network, alternative to the second data-type network is available.

20 . The apparatus of claim 19 wherein said processor is further configured to attempt to access the alternative network.
