Abstract

A biopsy device comprises a handpiece, a fluid collection system, and a power transmission source. The handpiece is configured for grasping by a single hand, and is independently manipulatable by hand for movement of the instrument toward and away from the patient. An elongated piercer extends from the distal end of the handpiece. The piercer has a sharpened distal end for entering the tissue and a port located proximal to the sharpened distal end for receiving a portion of tissue mass. An elongated cutter is disposed coaxially relative to a piercer lumen of the piercer. A distal blade of the cutter slides distally past the port of the piercer to sever the tissue portion drawn into the port by vacuum. The handpiece further comprises a holster for detachably connecting a cutter rotational transmission and a cutter axial transmission to the power transmission source.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A biopsy device, comprising:
 (a) a reusable component including at least one motor; (b) a disposable probe assembly, wherein the probe assembly comprises:
 (i) an elongated cannula, the cannula having a closed distal end and a tissue receiving port proximal to the distal end for receiving a portion of a tissue mass, and
(ii) a cutter disposed coaxially and movable relative to the cannula, the cutter distal end being configured to cut tissue when the cutter moves past the port; and
   (c) a source of vacuum communicating with the disposable probe assembly; wherein the probe assembly is detachably coupled with the reusable component such that the probe assembly and the reusable component together define a handpiece, and such that the at least one motor is operable to translate the cutter relative to the cannula; wherein the cannula is offset with respect to the handpiece.

2 . The biopsy device of claim 1 wherein the cannula is longitudinally offset with respect to the handpiece.

3 . The biopsy device of claim 1 wherein the cannula is longitudinally offset with respect to the handpiece toward an outer surface portion of the disposable probe assembly.

4 . The biopsy device of claim 1 wherein the cannula is offset with respect to the handpiece such that the offset is configured to facilitate insertion of the cannula parallel to the chest wall of a patient and such to facilitate extraction of tissue located close to the chest wall of the patient.

5 . The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the cannula comprises a distal piercing tip.

6 . The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the cutter is disposed within the cannula.

7 . The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the handpiece is adapted to receive tissue samples at a position proximal to the cannula.

8 . The biopsy device of claim 7 wherein the handpiece has a tissue sample receiving surface disposed proximal of the cannula.

9 . The biopsy device of claim 8 wherein the tissue sample receiving surface is an open surface.

10 . The biopsy device of claim 9 , further comprising a transverse opening adjacent to the tissue sample receiving surface, the transverse opening being sized and configured to provide access to the tissue sample receiving surface.

11 . The biopsy device of claim 1 wherein the handpiece comprises a surface for receiving tissue samples severed by the cutter, and wherein the surface for receiving tissue samples is spaced from the cannula.

12 . The biopsy device of claim 11 wherein the surface for receiving tissue samples is disposed distally of the proximal end of the handpiece.

13 . The biopsy device of claim 1 wherein the probe assembly comprises a surface for receiving tissue samples severed by the cutter.

14 . The biopsy device of claim 13 wherein the surface for receiving tissue samples is offset with respect to a longitudinal axis of the handpiece.

         15 . A biopsy device, comprising:
 (a) a reusable component; and (b) a disposable probe assembly detachably coupled with the reusable component, wherein the probe assembly comprises:
 (i) an elongated piercer, the piercer having a sharpened distal end, and
 (ii) an elongated cutter disposed coaxially and slidably relative to the piercer, the cutter distal end being configured to cut tissue when the cutter moves relative to the piercer;
wherein the probe assembly and reusable component together define a handpiece; wherein the piercer is longitudinally offset with respect to the handpiece such that the offset is configured to facilitate insertion of the piercer parallel to the chest wall of a patient and to facilitate extraction of tissue located close to the chest wall of the patient.
