Abstract

A method and system for detecting RADAR signals in a radio communications system is provided. A detection system includes a pulse examination. Based on the result from the examination/analysis, a RADAR pulse is detected. The examination/analysis may include a correlator for correlating received pulses with themselves or samples previously obtained.

36 . A method of detecting a RADAR signal in a communications network, the method comprising:
receiving a pulse; measuring a correlation of the received pulse with a copy of the pulse having a non-zero time offset; comparing the measured correlation with a threshold set based on an expected correlation of receiver noise; and when the measured correlation is lower than the threshold, determining that the pulse is a RADAR pulse.

         37 . The method of claim 36 , comprising:
measuring a correlation of the received pulse with a plurality of predefined pulses to produce a plurality of correlation measurements; and determining whether the pulse is a RADAR pulse based on at least some of the plurality of correlation measurements.

         38 . The method of claim 36 , comprising:
measuring a correlation of the received pulse with a plurality of copies of the pulse at respective non-zero time offsets to produce respective measured correlations; averaging the measured correlations to produce an average correlation measurement; and comparing the average correlation measurement to the threshold.

         39 . The method of claim 38 , comprising:
measuring a correlation of the received pulse with a copy of the pulse at a zero time offset to produce a self-correlation measurement; and comparing a ratio of the average correlation measurement to the self-correlation measurement to the threshold.

40 . The method of claim 37 , comprising storing at least one pulse sequence for use as the plurality of predefined pulses.

41 . The method of claim 36 , further comprising examining at least one characteristic of the received pulse, wherein determining that the pulse is a RADAR pulse is based at least in part on the at least one examined characteristic.

42 . The method of claim 41 , further comprising measuring correlations of the received pulse with externally obtained predefined pulses.

43 . The method of claim 42 , comprising selecting pulses for which correlations of with the received pulse are measured based at least in part on the at least one examined characteristic.

44 . The method of claim 41 , wherein examining at least one characteristic of the received pulse comprises examining the received pulse for presence of a standardized signature signal that identifies a format of the a communications transmission.

45 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the standardized signature signal comprises a header.

46 . The method of claim 41 , wherein examining at least one characteristic of the received pulse comprises pattern matching to the received pulse.

47 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising storing information for use in the pattern matching.

48 . The method of claim 36 , further comprising logging a newly received pulse for later use in searching for periodicities characteristic of a RADAR signal.

49 . The method of claim 40 , wherein storing the pulse sequence comprises selectively storing the pulse sequence.

50 . The method of claim 40 , further comprising:
encrypting the pulse sequence before storing the pulse sequence; and decrypting the stored pulse sequence for correlation of at least one of the predefined pulses with the received pulse.

51 . The method of claim 50 , comprising randomly selecting at least one key from the received pulse.

52 . The method of claim 51 , comprising storing the at least one key.

53 . The method of claim 40 , comprising storing the received pulse when the measured correlation of the received pulse with a copy of the pulse having a non-zero time offset is low.

54 . The method of claim 36 , comprising determining at least one action of at least one node of the communication network in response to determining that the pulse is a RADAR pulse.

55 . The method of claim 54 , further comprising communicating at least one indication between nodes of the communication network in response to determining that the pulse is a RADAR pulse.
