Method and Apparatus for Generating Channel Quality Estimates
Abstract
A base station receives channel quality reports from a plurality of mobile terminals. The channel quality reports from the mobile terminals indicate the signal power of the signals received by the mobile terminals from the base station and one or more interference parameters relating to the power of impairment components contributing to the total impairment of the received signal during a first time interval. The base station computes an estimated channel quality indication for a second time interval subsequent to the first time interval based on expected variations in the powers of the impairment components. The estimated channel quality indication for the second time interval is used by the base station to schedule the mobile terminals and to determine the transmission format.

receiving a signal from a base station; generating estimates of the signal power of the received signal and the power of one or more impairment components contributing to the total impairment of the received signal; and transmitting the signal power of said received signal and interference parameters indicating the power of said impairment components to a serving base station.
2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:
computing a channel quality indication; and
transmitting the channel quality indication to the serving base station along with the interference parameters.
3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting receiver type information to the serving base station along with said interference parameters.
4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the interference parameters includes a power ratio indicative of the relative powers of own cell and other cell interference.
5 . A mobile terminal in a wireless communication network, said mobile terminal comprising:
a transceiver to receive signals transmitted over a downlink channel by a base station and to transmit channel quality feedback to said base station; and a processor configured to:
estimate the signal power of the received signal and the power of one or more impairment components contributing to, the total impairment of the received signal; and
transmit the signal power and interference parameters indicating the power of said impairment components to a serving base station as channel quality feedback.
6 . The mobile terminal of claim 5 wherein the processor is further configured to:
compute a channel quality indication; and
transmit the channel quality indication to the serving base station along with the interference parameters.
7 . The mobile terminal of claim 5 wherein the processor is further configured to transmit receiver type information to the serving base station along with said interference parameters.
