Abstract

Some embodiments of the invention provide a method that presents a preview of a set of images in a graphical user interface (GUI) of a device. To generate the preview, the method initially selects a subset of images that includes several images in the set but not all the images in the set. After selecting the subset of images, the method concurrently displays the images in the selected subset as the preview of the set of images.

         53 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a computer program which when executed by at least one processing unit provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for a device, the GUI comprising:
 a display area for displaying a set of icons that represent a set of video clips, each video clip comprising a plurality of images; and   a preview display area for simultaneously displaying a subset of the plurality of images of a particular video clip that corresponds to a particular icon in the set of icons when the particular icon is selected.   
     
     
         54 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 53 , wherein the set of icons are moveable among a plurality of folders of the GUI. 
     
     
         55 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 53 , wherein the display area is part of a folder structure of an operating system of the device. 
     
     
         56 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 53 , wherein the preview display area is further for simultaneously at least one image in the subset of the plurality of images larger than other images in the subset of the plurality of images.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 53 , wherein the preview display area is further for simultaneously displaying the subset of the plurality of images based on an order in which the subset of the plurality of images of the particular video clip appear when the particular video clip is played. 
     
     
         58 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 53 , wherein the preview display area is further for displaying a set of attributes associated with the particular video clip.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 53 , wherein the subset of the plurality of images of the particular video clip is a first subset, wherein the preview display area is further for displaying playback of a second subset of the plurality of images of the particular video clip in order to provide a preview of the particular video clip.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 59 , wherein the preview display area is further for displaying an animation that (1) transitions from displaying the static group of images to displaying a single image of the particular video clip and (2) sequentially displays each image in the subset of the plurality of image after displaying the single image. 
     
     
         61 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 60 , wherein the preview display area transitions from displaying the static group of images to displaying the single image by displaying the static group of the images overlapping one another. 
     
     
         62 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 60 , wherein the preview display area transitions from displaying the static group of images to displaying the single image by enlarging the single image to overlap the static group of images. 
     
     
         63 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 59 , wherein at least one image in the second subset is not included in the first subset. 
     
     
         64 . A method for providing a graphical user interface (GUI) of a device, the method comprising:
 providing a display area for displaying a set of icons that represent a set of video clips, each video clip comprising a plurality of images; and   providing a preview display area for simultaneously displaying a subset of the plurality of images of a particular video clip that corresponds to a particular icon in the set of icons when the particular icon is selected.

The method of  claim 64 , wherein the display area is a first display area, wherein the selection of the particular icon is a first selection of the particular icon, wherein a second selection of the particular icon causes the particular icon's corresponding video clip to be played back in a second display area different from the first display area of the particular video clip's icon. 
     
     
         66 . The method of  claim 64 , wherein the preview display area is further for simultaneously displaying thumbnail versions of the subset of the plurality of images of the particular video clip. 
     
     
         67 . The method of  claim 64 , wherein the GUI is a GUI of an application that executes on the device, the application different than an operating system that executes on the device. 
     
     
         68 . The method of  claim 64 , wherein the preview display area is further for simultaneously displaying a single composite image comprising thumbnail versions of the subset of the plurality of images of the particular video clip. 
     
     
         69 . The method of  claim 64 , wherein each icon comprises a graphical component and a textual component. 
     
     
         70 . The method of  claim 69 , wherein the graphical component of each icon includes graphical data other than the plurality of images of the icon's corresponding video clip. 
     
     
         71 . The method of  claim 64 , wherein the set of icons are moveable among a plurality of folders of the GUI. 
     
     
         72 . The method of  claim 64 , wherein the display area is part of a folder structure of an operating system of the device.

         74 . The method of  claim 73  further comprising providing a selectable user interface (UI) item that when selected initiates playback of the subset of the plurality of images of the particular video clip in the preview display area. 
     
     
         75 . The method of  claim 74 , wherein the preview display area presents the selectable UI item when the particular icon is selected. 
     
     
         76 . The method of  claim 73 , wherein each icon comprises a graphical component and a textual component. 
     
     
         77 . The method of  claim 76 , wherein the graphical component of each icon includes graphical data other than the plurality of images of the icon's corresponding video clip. 
     
     
         78 . A method for providing a preview of files in a graphical user interface (GUI) of a device, the method comprising:
 for each particular file, selecting a plurality of portions of the particular file but not all portions of the particular file; and   for each particular file, defining an icon for display in the GUI, the particular file's icon (1) representing the particular file in the GUI and (2) comprising a first display area that concurrently displays a plurality of images of the plurality of selected portions of the particular file,   wherein selection of a particular file's icon causes the particular file to be opened in a second display area different from the first display area of the particular file's icon.   
     
     
         79 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein a particular file is a document and the plurality of portions of the particular file is a plurality of pages of the document. 
     
     
         80 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein a particular file is a graphical slide presentation and the plurality of portions of the particular file is a plurality of slides of the graphical slide presentation. 
     
     
         81 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein a particular file is a video clip and the plurality of portions of the particular file is a plurality of frames of the video clip. 
     
     
         82 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein the GUI comprises a plurality of folders, wherein of each particular file's icon is movable between the plurality of folders. 
     
     
         83 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein the GUI is a GUI of an operating system of the device. 
     
     
         84 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein the GUI is a GUI of an application that executes on the device, the device having an operating system that is different than the application. 
     
     
         85 . The method of  claim 84 , wherein the application is an image editing application. 
     
     
         86 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein the first display area concurrently displays the plurality of images based on an order that the selected portions of the particular file are organized with respect to the particular file. 
     
     
         87 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein the selection of the particular file's icon causes the particular file to be opened in the second display area by causing an application to open the particular file in the second display area. 
     
     
         88 . A non-transitory computer readable medium of a device, said computer readable medium storing (i) an operating system that includes a graphical user interface (GUI) and (ii) a file, the operating system comprising sets of instructions for:
 identifying a plurality of portions of the file for accessing the file;   defining an icon for display in the GUI, said icon (i) representing the file in the GUI and (ii) comprising a first display area that concurrently displays a plurality of images representing the plurality of identified portions of the file, wherein each image in the plurality of images is selectable; and   when a particular image associated is selected in the first display area of the icon, causing an application to open the file at the portion represented by the particular image in a second display area different from the first display area.   
     
     
         89 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 88 , wherein the first display area concurrently displays the plurality of images by displaying at least one image in the plurality of images larger than other images in the plurality of images. 
     
     
         90 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 88 , wherein the file is a document and the plurality of portions of the file is a plurality of pages of the document. 
     
     
         91 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 90 , wherein the plurality of images are thumbnail versions of the plurality of pages of the document. 
     
     
         92 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 90 , wherein the application is a word processing application. 
     
     
         93 . A method for defining icons for files in a graphical user interface (GUI) of an operating system the method comprising:
 identifying a plurality of portions of a particular file in the GUI, the plurality of portions of the particular file for accessing the particular file;   defining an icon for display in the GUI, said icon (i) representing the particular file in the GUI and (ii) comprising a first display area that concurrently displays a plurality of selectable user interface (UI) items for referencing the plurality of identified portions of the particular file; and   when a particular UI item is selected in the first display area of the icon, causing an application to open the particular file at the portion associated with the selected UI item in a second display area different from the first display area.   
     
     
         94 . The method of  claim 93 , wherein each selectable UI item in the plurality of selectable UI items comprises a thumbnail image of the portion of the particular file associated with the selectable UI item. 
     
     
         95 . The method of  claim 93 , wherein the file is a graphical slide presentation and the plurality of portions of the file is a plurality of slides of the graphical slide presentation. 
     
     
         96 . The method of  claim 93 , wherein the file is a video clip and the plurality of portions of the file is a plurality of frames of the video clip.
