Abstract

A system for treating a lesion site of a patient is disclosed. The system includes a cannula having a lumen, a conduit in communication with said lumen, an introducer stylet removably disposed within said cannula, a resecting device selectively insertable within said cannula, and an adjuvant treatment device selectively insertable within said cannula.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A system for treating a target site, comprising:
an introducer cannula having a lumen; a resecting device selectively insertable within the introducer cannula, wherein the resecting device operates to create a cavity at the target site; and an adjuvant treatment device that is selectively positioned within the introducer cannula after the resecting device is removed from the introducer cannula to deliver an adjuvant treatment to the target site.

2 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum device operatively connected to the resecting device.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the vacuum device is configured to deliver vacuum through the resecting device to the target site to aspirate the target site after resection thereof.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the adjuvant treatment device is a brachytherapy device.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the brachytherapy device includes a tubular body having a selectively expandable volume attached to a portion thereof, and a radiation source that may be selectively inserted into the expandable volume.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the introducer cannula is configured to be selectively opened along its length such that the brachytherapy device may be delivered to the cavity through the introducer cannula and the introducer cannula may be peeled apart to remove the introducer cannula from the brachytherapy device once positioned at the cavity.

7 . The system of claim 5 , further comprising a guide wire onto which the brachytherapy device may be mounted on to deliver the brachytherapy device to the cavity.

8 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a site marker delivery device for delivering one or more site markers into the cavity.

9 . A method for treating a target site, comprising:
creating a pathway to a target site; inserting a resecting device through the pathway and into the target site; resecting tissue to form a cavity defined by surrounding tissue; and applying an adjuvant therapy to the surrounding tissue.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
removing the resecting device from the cavity; inserting a site marker delivery device through the pathway into the cavity; and deploying a site marker into the cavity.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising aspirating the cavity prior to deploying a site marker into the cavity.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein aspirating the cavity is performed by delivering vacuum to the cavity through the resection device prior to removing the resection device from the cavity.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein aspirating the cavity is performed by delivering vacuum to the cavity through the introducer cannula.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein aspirating the cavity is performed by inserting an aspiration wand into the cavity after removal of the resecting device and prior to insertion of the site marker delivery device.

15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein application of adjuvant therapy includes insertion of a brachytherapy device into the cavity.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising expanding a volume of the brachytherapy device in the cavity and selectively inserting a radiation source within the volume.

17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising selectively removing the radiation source from the volume for a predetermined time period, while keeping the volume in an expanded configuration within the cavity and re-inserting the radiation source.

18 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising delivering the brachytherapy device into the cavity through the introducer cannula.

19 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising peeling the introducer cannula away from the brachytherapy device after the brachytherapy device is positioned within the cavity.

20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:
mounting the brachytherapy device on a guide wire; delivering the guide wire to the cavity; sliding the brachytherapy device along the guide wire to the cavity; and removing the guide wire from the cavity and brachytherapy device.
