Abstract

In a method and system for navigating content, a plurality of content panels are provided for display in a user interface region of a display area. User input corresponding to a direction of navigation within the first user interface is received. A first direction of navigation causes a movement in the plurality of content panels displayed in the user interface region. A second direction of navigation causes a transition from a first user interface region to a second user interface region, resulting in at least a portion of the first user interface region shifting out of the display area and at least a portion of the second user interface region shifting into the display area.

Claims

providing a plurality of content panels for display in a first user interface region of an entire display area of a display device; receiving user input corresponding to a direction of navigation within the first user interface region; based on a first direction of navigation, causing a movement, using at least one processor, within the first user interface region of the plurality of content panels being displayed; and based on a second direction of navigation, causing a transitioning from the first user interface region to a second user interface region, the transitioning resulting in at least a portion of the first user interface region shifting out of the entire display area of the display device and at least a portion of the second user interface region shifting into the entire display area of the display device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user input is received from one of a remote control operated by the user, a keyboard operated by the user, a mouse operated by the user, and a touch-based gesture performed by the user.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of content panels each include one of a media content item and at least one selectable filter for filtering media content items, and further comprising:
when the plurality of content panels each include at least one selectable filter, comparing the media content items to a selected filter; and retrieving metadata associated with the filtered media content items for use in the displaying of the filtered media content.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of content panels are arranged in a carousel and the causing of the movement of the plurality of content panels comprises rotating the plurality of content panels around an axis of the carousel, wherein the rotating of the plurality of content panels comprises one of rotating a second subset of content panels into a position in the first user interface region occupied by a first subset of content panels and rotating a second content panel to a position in the first user interface region occupied by a first content panel.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the content panels occupy a first portion of the user interface region, wherein the filtered media content items occupy a second portion of the user interface region, and wherein the first portion of the first user interface region is positioned above the second portion of the first user interface region.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein one of the plurality of content panels is an active content panel, and wherein dimensions of the active content panel are larger than the dimensions of inactive content filter panels.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of content panels are horizontally arranged and the causing of the movement of the plurality of content panels comprises shifting a first content panel out of the display area in the first direction of navigation and shifting a second content panel into the display area in the first direction of navigation.

8 . A machine-readable storage medium storing a set of instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:
providing a plurality of content panels for display in a first user interface region of an entire display area of a display device; receiving user input corresponding to a direction of navigation within the first user interface region; based on a first direction of navigation, causing a movement, using at least one processor, within the first user interface region of the plurality of content panels being displayed; and based on a second direction of navigation, causing a transitioning from the first user interface region to a second user interface region, the transitioning resulting in at least a portion of the first user interface region shifting out of the entire display area of the display device and at least a portion of the second user interface region shifting into the entire display area of the display device.

9 . The machine-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the user input is received from one of a remote control operated by the user, a keyboard operated by the user, a mouse operated by the user, and a touch-based gesture performed by the user.

10 . The machine-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of content panels each include one of a media content item and at least one selectable filter for filtering media content items, and further comprising:
when the plurality of content panels each include at least one selectable filter, comparing the media content items to a selected filter; and retrieving metadata associated with the filtered media content items for use in the displaying of the filtered media content.

11 . The machine-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of content panels are arranged in a carousel and the causing of the movement of the plurality of content panels comprises rotating the plurality of content panels around an axis of the carousel, wherein the rotating of the plurality of content panels comprises one of rotating a second subset of content panels into a position in the first user interface region occupied by a first subset of content panels and rotating a second content panel to a position in the first user interface region occupied by a first content panel.

12 . The machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the content panels occupy a first portion of the user interface region, wherein the filtered media content items occupy a second portion of the user interface region, and wherein the first portion of the first user interface region is positioned above the second portion of the first user interface region.

13 . The machine-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein one of the plurality of content panels is an active content panel, and wherein dimensions of the active content panel are larger than the dimensions of inactive content filter panels.

         14 .
