Abstract

A method and apparatus of a wireless subscriber requesting an uplink (UL) grant size from a base station (BS) are disclosed. One method includes the subscriber analyzing traffic patterns of uplink data, the subscriber selecting a new grant size based on the analyzed traffic patterns, and the subscriber requesting the new grant size by signaling the new grant size to the BS.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method of requesting an Uplink (UL) grant size by a wireless subscriber, the method comprising:
calculating a packet size ratio as a packet size of a current data packet divided by a previous maximum packet size; selecting a new grant size as a current grant size multiplied by the packet size ratio; and requesting the new grant size by signaling the new grant size to a base station.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected new grant size is maintained until another new grant size is requested.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the previous maximum packet size is a maximum packet size of a packet received within a current predetermined time interval.

4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising determining the previous maximum packet size, wherein, for a first packet of the current predetermined time interval, the previous maximum packet size is set as a maximum packet size from a previous predetermined time interval.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein, for a second packet of the current predetermined time interval, the previous maximum packet size is set as a packet size of the first packet of the current predetermined time interval.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein, for other packets of the current predetermined time interval, the previous maximum packet size is set as a maximum packet size from among previous packets in the current predetermined time interval.

7 . A method of calculating an Uplink (UL) grant size by a wireless subscriber, the method comprising:
calculating a packet size ratio as a packet size of a current data packet divided by a previous maximum packet size; selecting a new grant size based on the packet size ratio.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising calculating a previous number of application bytes as a sum of sizes of packets within a previous predetermined time interval that immediately precedes a current predetermined time interval.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the selecting of a new grant size includes multiplying the previous number of application bytes by the packet size ratio.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the selecting of the new grant size includes multiplying a current grant size by the packet size ratio.

11 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:
monitoring a plurality of predetermined time intervals; and tracking a variation in the previous maximum packet size between each predetermined time interval.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein, when the variation exceeds a predetermined threshold, a largest selected grant size from the plurality of predetermined time intervals is set as the new grant size.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein, when the variation exceeds a predetermined threshold, a selected grant size of a most recent predetermined time interval is set as the new grant size.

         14 . A mobile subscriber device, comprising:
one or more processors configured to monitor sizes of data packets within predetermined time intervals; the one or more processors configured to calculate a packet size ratio as a size of a packet of a current predetermined time interval divided by a previous maximum packet size; and the one or more processors configured to select a new grant size as a current grant size multiplied by the packet size ratio.

15 . The mobile subscriber device of claim 14 , wherein the previous maximum packet size is a largest size from among packets received during the predetermined time intervals.

16 . The mobile subscriber device of claim 14 , further comprising:
the one or more processors configured to monitor a variation of packet sizes between each of the predetermined time intervals, wherein, the one or more processors is configured to select the new grant size as a predetermined value when the variation exceeds a predetermined threshold.

17 . The mobile subscriber device of claim 14 , further comprising:
the one or more processors configured to compare a number of packets of a current time interval to a number of packets of a previous time interval, wherein the new grant size is selected based on the comparison between the number of packets of the current time to the number of packets of the previous time interval.

18 . The mobile subscriber device of claim 14 , further comprising a coder/decoder (CODEC) configured to measure sizes of the packets.

19 . The mobile subscriber device of claim 14 , further comprising calculating the current grant size as a sum of sizes of packets within a previous time interval.

20 . The mobile subscriber device of claim 14 , wherein the selected new grant size is maintained until another new grant size is calculated and requested.
