Cards and devices with multifunction magnetic emulators and methods for using same
Abstract
A payment card (e.g., credit and/or debit card) is provided with a magnetic emulator operable of communicating information to a magnetic stripe reader. Information used in validating a financial transaction is encrypted based on time such that a validating server requires receipt of the appropriate encrypted information for a period of time to validate a transaction for that period of time. Such dynamic information may be communicated using such an emulator such that a card may be swiped through a magnetic stripe reader—yet communicate different information based on time. An emulator may receive information as well as communicate information to a variety of receivers (e.g., an RFID receiver).
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 - 5 . (canceled)
6 . A payment card comprising:
an electronic device operable of communicating information to a magnetic stripe reader; a first magnetic shielding covering at least an entire side of said electronic device, wherein said magnetic shielding blocks said communicated information; and a second magnetic shielding in the proximity of said electronic device, wherein said second magnetic shielding passes at least a portion of said communicated information.
7 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a battery.
8 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a processor.
9 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a display.
10 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said magnetic shielding and said second magnetic shielding are of different shapes.
11 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said magnetic shielding is a magnetic material.
12 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said magnetic shielding is a magnetic material and said second magnetic shielding is a magnetic material.
13 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said second magnetic shielding includes a space in alignment with an active portion of said electronic device.
14 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said electronic device is disposed between said magnetic shielding and said second magnetic shielding.
15 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a button.
16 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a button, wherein said electronic device communicates said information based on a signal from said button.
17 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a detector, wherein said electronic device communicates said information based on a signal from said detector, said signal being indicative of a presence of said magnetic stripe reader.
18 . The payment card of claim 6 , further comprising a button and a detector, wherein said detector is made operative based on a first signal from said button and said electronic device communicates said information based on a second signal from said detector, said second signal being indicative of a presence of said magnetic stripe reader.
19 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said electronic device is provided on a printed circuit board.
20 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said electronic device is provided on a multiple-layer printed circuit board.
21 . The payment card of claim 6 , wherein said electronic device is provided on a flexible, multiple-layer printed circuit board.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
