Abstract

A method and composition for forming an adhesive bond is described. The method includes depositing an aqueous dispersion on a substrate to form a selectively activatable coating, the aqueous dispersion including (A) a polymer capable of forming an adhesive, (B) at least one dispersing agent; and (C) at least one of a tackifying resin, a wax, or an oil wherein the dispersion has at least one of an average particle size of from about 0.1 to about 100 microns and a polydispersity of less than 5; and selectively activating at least a portion of the coated substrate to form the adhesive bond.

A method for forming an adhesive bond comprising: depositing an aqueous dispersion on a substrate to form a selectively activatable coating, the aqueous dispersion comprising: (A) at least one polymer capable of forming an adhesive; (B) at least one dispersing agent; and (C) at least one of a tackifying resin, a wax, or an oil, wherein the dispersion has at least one of an average particle size of from about 0.1 to about 100 microns and a polydispersity of less than 5; and selectively activating at least a portion of the coated substrate to form the adhesive bond. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising drying the coated substrate prior to selectively activating. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the aqueous dispersion is deposited on the substrate at a temperature below a melting temperature of the polymer. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein selectively activating comprises at least one of heating or applying pressure.

         12 . An aqueous hot melt adhesive dispersion, comprising:
 (A) at least one polymer capable of forming an adhesive, wherein the at least one polymer comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of polyethylene homopolymer, polypropylene homopolymer, ethylene-α-olefin copolymers, propylene-α-olefin copolymers, propylene-ethylene copolymers, and ethylene-α-olefin block interpolymers;   (B) at least one tackifying resin;   (C) a dispersing agent; and   (D) water, wherein the dispersion has at least one of an average particle size of from about 0.1 to about 100 microns and a polydispersity of less than 5.   
     
     
         13 . The dispersion of  claim 12 , wherein components (A), (B), and (C) total about 1 to about 74 volume percent of a total volume of the dispersion. 
     
     
         14 . The dispersion of  claim 12 , wherein the dispersing agent is present in an amount from about 1 to about 30 pph of components (A) and (B). 
     
     
         15 . The dispersion of  claim 12 , wherein water is present in an amount from about 26 to about 99 volume percent of the total dispersion. 
     
     
         16 . The dispersion of  claim 12 , further comprising a biocide present in a range from about 0 to about 1 weight percent of a total weight. 
     
     
         17 . The dispersion of  claim 12 , wherein the polymer has an average particle size from about 0.1 to about 10 microns.

         22 . An article comprising:
 an adhesive element, wherein at least a portion of the adhesive element was formed from a selectively activatable coating, wherein the selectively activatable coating is comprised of a dispersion comprising:
 (A) at least one polymer capable of forming an adhesive, wherein the at least one polymer comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of polyethylene homopolymer, polypropylene homopolymer, ethylene-α-olefin copolymers, propylene-α-olefin copolymers, propylene-ethylene copolymers, and ethylene-α-olefin block interpolymers; 
 (B) at least one tackifying resin; 
 (C) a dispersing agent; and 
 (D) water, 
 wherein the dispersion has at least one of an average particle size of from about 0.1 to about 100 microns and a polydispersity of less than 5. 
   
     
     
         23 . The article of  claim 22 , wherein components (A), (B), and (C) total about 1 to about 74 volume percent of the total dispersion. 
     
     
         24 . The article of  claim 22 , wherein the dispersing agent is present in an amount from about 1 to about 30 pph of components (A) and (B). 
     
     
         25 . The article of  claim 22 , where water is present in an amount from about 26 to about 99 percent of a total volume. 
     
     
         26 . The article of  claim 22 , wherein the dispersion has an average particle size between about 0.1 microns and about 10 microns. 
     
     
         27 . A method of forming a coated substrate, comprising: depositing an aqueous dispersion on a substrate to form a selectively activatable coating, the dispersion comprising: (A) at least one polymer capable of forming an adhesive; (B) at least one dispersing agent; (C) at least one of a tackifying resin, a wax, or an oil; and (D) water, wherein the dispersion has at least one of an average particle size of from about 0.1 to about 100 microns and a polydispersity of less than 5. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 27 , wherein the substrate comprises at least one of paper, paperboard, film, glass, ceramic, fabric, composite materials, fiber, wood, metal, clay coated cardboard, non-woven hygienics, book binding, plastic molded articles, concrete, and asphalt. 
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 27 , wherein the dispersion has average particle size of from about 0.1 microns to about 10 microns.

An aqueous adhesive dispersion, comprising: (A) an ethylene/α-olefin block interpolymer comprising polymerized units of ethylene and .α-olefin, wherein the interpolymer is characterized by an average block index greater than zero and up to about 1.0 and a molecular weight distribution, Mw/Mn, greater than about 1.3; (B) a dispersing agent; and (C) water. 
     
     
         40 . The dispersion of  claim 39 , wherein the average block index is greater than 0 but less than about 0.4. 
     
     
         41 . The dispersion of  claim 39 , wherein the average block index is in the range from about 0.1 to about 0.3. 
     
     
         42 . The dispersion of  claim 39 , wherein the average block index is in the range from about 0.4 to about 1.0. 
     
     
         43 . The dispersion of  claim 39 , wherein the interpolymer has a density of less than about 0.91 g/cc. 
     
     
         44 . The dispersion of  claim 39 , wherein the interpolymer has a density in the range from about 0.86 g/cc to about 0.91 g/cc. 
     
     
         45 . The dispersion of  claim 39 , wherein the α-olefin is styrene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, norbornene, 1-decene, 1,5-hexadiene, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         46 . An aqueous adhesive dispersion, comprising: (A) an ethylene/α-olefin block interpolymer comprising polymerized units of ethylene and α-olefin, the interpolymer characterized by having at least one fraction obtained by Temperature Rising Elution Fractionation (“TREF”), wherein the fraction has a block index greater than about 0.3 and up to about 1.0 and the ethylene/α.-olefin interpolymer has a molecular weight distribution, Mw/Mn, greater than about 1.3; (B) a dispersing agent; and (C) water. 
     
     
         47 . The dispersion of  claim 12 , wherein the polymer comprises an ethylene/α-olefin block interpolymer.
