System and method for travel route planning using safety metrics

Abstract

Systems and methods are described to receive a safety preference; calculate a temporary route; analyze a portion of the temporary route to determine whether the portion is sufficiently safe based on the safety preference; modify the portion of the temporary route when the portion is not sufficiently safe; and present the temporary route. Other systems and methods are described.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method comprising:
 presenting, by a processor-based system, on a display of the processor-based system, a user-interface comprising:
 a user input portion; 
 a map portion; and 
 a route directions portion; 
   receiving, via the user input portion, a safety preference indicating an acceptable structural safety rating of a type of a transportation structure;   calculating a temporary route that accommodates the acceptable structural safety rating;   presenting the temporary route in at least one of the map portion and the route directions portion; and   presenting, in the map portion, information related to a transportation structure along the temporary route.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the information related to the transportation structure comprises at least one of: a safety rating, a construction date, or a construction type.
