Abstract
This invention relates generally to nucleic acid sequences encoding proteins that are associated with abiotic stress responses and abiotic stress tolerance in plants. In particular, this invention relates to nucleic acid sequences encoding proteins that confer drought, heat, cold, and/or salt tolerance to plants.

2 . The transgenic plant or plant cell of claim 1 , wherein the plant is a monocotyledonous plant, a dicotyledonous plant or a gymnosperm plant.

The transgenic plant or plant cell of claim 1 , wherein the plant is selected from the group consisting of maize, wheat, rye, oat, triticale, rice, barley, soybean, peanut, cotton, rapeseed, canola, manihot , pepper, sunflower, flax, borage, safflower, linseed, primrose, rapeseed, turnip rape, tagetes, solanaceous plants, potato, tobacco, eggplant, tomato, Vicia species, pea, alfalfa, coffee, cacao, tea, Salix species, oil palm, coconut, perennial grass, forage crops and Arabidopsis thaliana.
4 . A transgenic plant generated from the transgenic plant cell of claim 1 , or a progeny of said transgenic plant, wherein said transgenic plant is a monocotyledonous plant, a dicotyledonous plant or a gymnosperm plant.

The transgenic plant of claim 4 , wherein the plant is selected from the group consisting of maize, wheat, rye, oat, triticale, rice, barley, soybean, peanut, cotton, rapeseed, canola, manihot , pepper, sunflower, flax, borage, safflower, linseed, primrose, rapeseed, turnip rape, tagetes, solanaceous plants, potato, tobacco, eggplant, tomato, Vicia species, pea, alfalfa, coffee, cacao, tea, Salix species, oil palm, coconut, perennial grass, forage crops and Arabidopsis thaliana.
6 . A progeny of the transgenic plant of claim 1 , wherein said transgenic plant is a monocotyledonous plant, a dicotyledonous plant or a gymnosperm plant.
7 . A seed produced by the transgenic plant of claim 4 , wherein the seed is genetically homozygous for the SRP coding nucleic acid sequence.
8 . The transgenic plant or plant cell of claim 1 , wherein the environmental stress is salinity stress, drought stress, temperature stress, metal stress, chemical stress, pathogenic and oxidative stresses, or any combination thereof.
9 . The transgenic plant or plant cell of claim 1 , wherein the nucleic acid molecule comprises:
a) the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 41; b) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 42; or c) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 42, wherein said polypeptide has the activity of the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 42.

A nucleic acid construct comprising the nucleic acid molecule of claim 10 and one or more regulatory elements, wherein expression of said nucleic acid molecule in a plant or plant cell results in increased tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild-type plant or plant cell.

A vector comprising the nucleic acid molecule of claim 10 or a nucleic acid construct comprising said nucleic acid molecule, wherein expression of said nucleic acid molecule in a plant or plant cell results in increased tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild-type plant or plant cell.
13 . A host cell comprising the isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 10 , or a nucleic acid construct or vector comprising said isolated nucleic acid molecule.
14 . A method of producing a transgenic plant with increased tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild-type plant, comprising:
a) transforming a plant or plant cell with the isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 10 , or a nucleic acid construct or vector comprising said nucleic acid molecule; b) optionally generating a transgenic plant from the plant cell; and c) selecting a transgenic plant with increased tolerance and/or resistance to an environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild-type plant, wherein expression of said isolated nucleic acid molecule in the transgenic plant results in increased tolerance and/or resistance to said environmental stress as compared to a corresponding non-transformed wild-type plant.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the isolated nucleic acid molecule comprises:
a) the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 41; b) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 42; or c) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 42, wherein said polypeptide has the activity of the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 42.
16 . A method of modifying stress tolerance of a plant comprising increasing expression level of the nucleic acid molecule of claim 10 in a plant.
17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the expression level of the nucleic acid molecule is increased by transforming the plant with an expression vector comprising said nucleic acid molecule.
18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the nucleic acid molecule comprises:
a) the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 41; b) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 42; or c) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 42, wherein said polypeptide has the activity of the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 42.
19 . An agricultural product produced by the transgenic plant of claim 1 or parts thereof.
20 . A method for increasing yield in a plant, comprising transforming and expressing in a plant the nucleic acid molecule of claim 10 , or a nucleic acid construct or vector comprising said nucleic acid molecule.Cited by (0)
